What's with all these new members?

Many are just spammers. Why not just remove them. Who knows what kind of garbage you might get by going to their sites?

We're actually in pretty good shape here, I believe. You ain't seen REAL spam! On the
Burning Man forum, they get organized spam attacks where an automated program
plants narsty stuff on more-or-less-every thread on the board. Takes days to
remove it, sometimes. Of course, that's a HUGE forum that makes a
"good" target.

If you are thinking of newbies who drop in with one big question and then disappear
again, well... I've probably done that a few times here and there myself, searching
for this or that, testing the waters, stumbling around on this winding information
super goat-trail best way I know how....

Yes, I've seen a couple of "shotgun posters" here, but on the whole I think we
are doing great.

And we should remember to thank our host Steve for making it possible!

(Edited for spelling / clarity)

We rarely seem to get spam and when we do Steve kills it quick. Come on...you even been on the Pirate 44 board? You have to pay $20 per year to get a "red star" to post pics and use the search function and even then your post will get littered with links on keywords to other sites.

As a side note...I'd happily pay $20 per year for this board.....

So I'm not quite sure when you are considered a regular and not a Newby anymore, but it seems to me that if it is early April and somebody joined the board on February the 23th. that this person in my opinion still also is a Newby.
I know I am a newby, and NO you will not get any spam from me. And I will be visiting a lot here over the next year.

Actually, conerning what the alternatives are, and where some of the new people may have drifted in from, this is a good thing!!

Time to get the fire extinguisher out. Let me rephrase my question. I see new members join. When I look at their profile, they have websites for tobacco or meds. That is what I am asking about. I clicked on one and a box popped up that I couldn't close. I had to shut down my computer to get rid of it. It seems the last couple of weeks 3 out of 4 new members are just about putting up their websites. That is what I am speaking about. I don't have any problem with people joining this site. I only joined a short while ago myself. Boy, you guys are a little touchy. Crack open a cold one.

Oh, by the way... Are you done kicking my ass yet???

And I reiterate....

Come on...this site is pretty flameless. One stop at some of the others out there and you'd see what I mean.

There are always spammers like that. Steve does a damn fine job of eliminating them.

That said...that'll teach you to click on a link. I would suggest you defrag and run a deep search for trojans and spyware. If you get some form of smitfraud like my computer recently got my condolences go out to you. The only way I found to get rid of it was to reinstall windows.....with a pirated key and a pirated SP2 because my key no longer works....and Hadji HowcanIhelpyou at microsoft insisted that I just needed to purchase a new key.

I get an email when somebody registers and I take the time to look at the profile of every user and delete all of the spam users between one or two days of them registering. Check the memberlist you will not see them.

In the next version of this site, which will be launching soon, users will not appear as beeing a new member until they have activated their account so you would never spam users names.

That's just another plus about Steve's board - everyone checks their attitudes and prejudices at the door before they come in! Yes, it's a "skoolie" board, but the folks here are an eclectic bunch and bring much useful information from other vocations, hobbies and pasttimes that somehow manage to enhance the skoolie experience. For example: being land-locked for most of my formative years I didn't know much about boats, yet some here have shared design and other info that can be applied to the conversion process, so I'm sure your coach experience will be a benefit also.

Don't mean to rave, (OK, yeah I do), but if I only had one resource to access to help with my conversion, this board would be it! THANKS STEVE!

From one "misfit" to another, Welcome Aboard!

Looking back over this thread, there are a couple of things I would like to say. First. I wrote four sentences and the world blows up. Some read part of what I wrote and maybe some read all. I have nothing bad to say about any members, new or old. I don't really care if someone joined two hours ago. That person might be smarter than the rest of the members combined. Everyone has the right to their input, including me.

One wrote,

Who cares? What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?? You took one line out of what I wrote. It was my mistake for not being clear enough. What about you, would you care re-read the rest of what I wrote?

Another wrote:

What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Your reply has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with my post. Maybe you should re-read it again.

I think only a couple of you read my post and knew what I was pointing out.

The other three lines that I wrote...

Quote:
Many are just spammers.
The last eight of ten(+/-) profiles that I clicked on had links to websites that were tobacco and med ads.

Quote:
Why not just remove them.
My mistake again. I did not know that Steve deleted those profiles. I didn't go back over the member list to see that they had been removed. Steve already had a handle on it. It just seemed that all of a sudden every new profile I clicked on was spam. Hats off to you Steve. You do a great job.

Quote:

I had something happen to my computer. My mistake again.

So, if you bothered to read ALL of what I wrote this time. I know you're saying, "When is this bag of wind going to make his point?" Don't get your panties in a bunch again. I'm getting there. My point IS,
I don't care if you're a troll(whatever the hell that is), very smart or the stupidest idiot on the planet. I don't care if you ask a question so dumb that you should be beaten. I don't care if you joined three years ago or three minutes ago. None of that has to do with my post. I was just bringing something to light that was already being taken care of. I didn't want this site to get cluttered with a bunch of garbage. That's it. I'm done.

Now now...no need to get bent out of shape. The problem with written text on the computer is that you can't see the inflection in person's voice. I would venture to say all these guys are just giving you friendly $hit. That's why I add smilies to everything. It might be annoying on the eyes, but atleast the message is clear. Don't worry about it and don't take it too hard. (that's a wink and a laugh)

Silent Radio comes to Skoolie.net

click.

[A gentle glow rises in the vacuum tubes and the hum of approaching
excitements fills the room. Oh, what we have so callously discarded
in the name of modernity.]

Announcer:

Good evening and welcome to
Great Moments of Technical Advances -- Live And Direct
on Silent Radio.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

EDIT -- 2007 MAY 13:
I admit defeat. I fail to make a good fun story out of this, so I'm deleting it. I've even
used Silent Radio -- very successfully -- in my paid work as a magazine writer, but
my mind's gone blank.
I'm leaving some links or whatever I posted subsequently, in case you are curious.

Now back to working on these silly buses!
