Do you have a CB radio in your bus?

Hey guys!
An hour north of me, there was a horrible pile-up a few days ago:
https://youtu.be/7ZFG4CBWnyE

Many of the comments on this video (on facebook) mentioned the value of a CB radio. They said this crash may have been avoided had the drivers turned on or had a CB radio.

What are your thoughts on this, does your school bus have a CB radio?
If so, how useful is this radio for you?

I have one, being FE it is not usable going down interstate/hwy at 50 MPH, just can't hear it :D

I use it in traffic sometimes just being curious why traffic is stopped, I have used them since around 1979, when dad bought his first cobra 25GTL, I had to get a license and call sign back then...still "use" the number time to time when I go old school and "sign in" on the radio

I am interested in HAM and just need to find time for another hobby

Yes.....

Keeps me entertained...... sometimes.

maggiemae 04-20-2015 11:46 AM

Do you think it is useful?

The reason I ask is that I have heard that most people are vulgar when they broadcast on the radio. Is this what you have found?

EastCoastCB 04-20-2015 12:03 PM

Yes. Vulgarity is pretty standard.
Lots of truckers rambling on about bs, lot lizards, and more bs.
My dad used to be on the cb all the time. They have more or less become a thing of the past.

CB is right, the cell phone has taken over, now hand held two way radios work great car to car or bus to bus...and are cheap/mobile and can be helpful when spotting the bus parking or backing up (never be between bus and anything solid)

My MCI prison bus has two CB's and a satellite hook up. Which one should I keep?

EastCoastCB 04-20-2015 04:03 PM

I don't have any use for either myself. :)

A cb can be helpful if your not,
Near a city
Near a interstate
In the south.
Just my opinion.

The-Breeze 04-20-2015 10:11 PM

That's not green Bansil...it's sky blue and I agree (it matches the satellite hook up) so keep that one.

Ahhh, perfect harmony in the universe has been achieved.... Ooommmmmm :D

I still have the little mic hanger bracket from the one that was in ours before we got it.

porkchopsandwiches 04-21-2015 09:50 AM

I have some cheap Uniden one I got for like $25 off Amazon. During my maiden voyage trip ~a year ago (has it been that long already?) I had it on most of the time. Lots of banter but it DID help me avoid running over an "alligator" (blown up tire in the road). That was basically my first time driving the bus and I was paying more attention to the gauges and every noise I heard than the road! I was also warned about a few speed traps but that was irrelevant because the limit was 70 and I was chugging along at 65.

maggiemae 04-26-2015 06:16 PM

We will have to get one when we are more mobile. My friend who goes off roading has one. It seems like added security!

EastCoastCB 04-26-2015 07:45 PM

I suppose in an emegency, listening to the truckers and lot lizards could help pass the time. :p

crazycal 04-26-2015 09:41 PM

I might buy a CB when I go to Texas to pick up Texas. I have an Amateur Radio License(Ham Radio) and am taking a 75 watt 2 meter radio with me. 75 watts goes a lot farther than 4 watts with a CB and I'm legal.

Coming back from Tennessee on I40, I had no cell coverage through much of Oklahoma with Verizon.
