In the day, it was the "poor man's diesel", for those who did not want to spend the extra on something like a DT466, I suspect the 8.2 was much the same.

You are thinking of the 8v71TA commonly referred to as the "318" Detroit as 318hp was a common configuration in OTR trucks.

That line of motors, ranging from the 2-71 to the 16v92 are two stroke motors as opposed to the 8.2 DD which is a four stroke. Very different motors.
