I say it's worth keeping the door. Weld on a few patches, smooth it up and paint it tiffany like the rest.

That's what I want.
I'm just gonna get creative a bit I suppose. Its too cool an opening to lose.

Man, the CL folks who reply about painting are sure a weird and pushy lot!
ANYONE IN FL GOOD WITH SPRAYING?

That guy that suggested to get rid of the door is a noob.

Why do u need painters dude. Can't u rent the spray machine and do it yourself?

I am not good at Spraying - but I helped my nephew with my bus. If you have the paint and sprayer - I would be happy to come up and give it a whirl!

And definitely keep the door.

EastCoastCB 06-13-2017 08:07 PM

Well I've taken auto body class and sprayed a few cars in my teens, but I'm looking for someone GOOD at spraying to get a really nice finish.
Looking to go that extra mile and have a really nice paint job.
the big bus will likely be rustoleum as usual. And I'll definitely do all that myself.
But Im wanting this daily driver bus to have a bit more pizzazz than the average conversion.
Gonna look great with that big chrome duck and big chrome pipe!

If you're decent with an hvlp gun maybe we can work something out!:thumb:

Fingers crossed...
Midwest Transit says they can special order me the seal for the WC door. $300... pretty steep, but I've only got $1700 in this bus and that seal would really MAKE the "restoration".
I can get the door repaired and rust proofed for very little $.
What yall think?
I think I may order that seal tomorrow!

That's great news except for the cost.

Yeah, but I don't mind paying for quality, or for essentials.
I honestly figured it would be at least a couple hundo.
Its such a sweet SWEET lil bus it may be worth it I think.

Another thing I'm trying to figure out is what tail lights to go with.
I like the flanged type semi's all have, so I may go with those.

I wish all you smart, creative folks were close by. We need more get-togethers.

A man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do.

EastCoastCB 06-14-2017 09:58 PM

It's looking like they CAN get the seal. Gonna measure one more time tomorrow while he checks a couple more suppliers. SHould have this elusive seal ordered by tomorrow afternoon!! WOOHOOOOO!!!!!

Thanks!
Sometimes its worth taking a pause in a project till the right materials can be found. Glad I waited it out. That door is sweet and will be so nice to use.

Crazy how hard the odd parts like this seal can be to find. Makes me wonder if I should buy two, just in case!:hide:

Tango 06-14-2017 10:13 PM

Roger the difficulty of oddball parts. Many things can be fabbed but there are others you just gotta' find. Finding stuff for a bus made early in the previous century/past millennium gives me a special appreciation for those on the "hunt".

1olfart 06-14-2017 10:50 PM

Looks like you finally get to 'seal the deal'

You Go Sunshine!

Too much money for a rubber seal. Keep the door but do the cut-off wheel and use a standard gasket. That new gasket is only going to collect water like the original and rust out again. You're a smart guy and can fab something up.

Good news this morning!! I think it's worth the money.
It may never leak again.... figure it out so that it doesn't. And if it does, won't that be many many many years down the road? You can deal with it then. And besides you have no idea how the original seal was put on that day and what was going on. If the fabricator did something slightly wrong, even just slightly and now you're paying the price.
Yes it does pay to take your time and get the right part. There's always other things you can be doing while you wait.... many other things lol

$300 is way steep, but when they got you by the short hairs...

You'll fix the door right and you will monitor it closely for the tiniest rust bubble and remediate, unlike a fleet director who is just trying to keep 'em
on the road. Maybe modify/add a gutter?

I'm pretty good at sourcing stuff, but that thing is unobtanium. :thumb:
