Legality of Modified Stop Sign

I want to keep the swing-out stop sign. I'm not sure what I want to use it for but I want to keep it. Does anyone know the exact legal requirements in their state (bonus points if your state is AZ)? Can it still be an octagon? Can it read anything but stop? Can it have lights? Or does it have to be eliminated entirely? Is it against the law for it to exist, or are you only breaking the law in its use?

I don't know the answers to any of your questions, but I don't need to know, because I don't have a stop sign. The school district [in WA] removed it before the dealer I bought the bus from brought it here [to OR].

From what they've left in the rest of the bus, I interpret the removal as meaning the stop sign was either worth money to the district, or they believed they were required to remove it. Good luck with finding out about the legality of retaining the sign.

If it isn't red and says STOP. it's not a stop sign. I plan on making mine a clock that shows 4:20

Damn now I wished I kept mine

I'll have to have a better look. I haven't paid that much attention to it, but I think all that's gone on mine is the red octagon, which as o1marc pointed out is what makes it a stop sign legally.

SOme states have weird restrictions on what you can put on the outside of a vehicle, I'd check that out if I were you.

You have just inspired my thinking a "NOW SERVING" conversion to the stop sign is in order for the bar build...

My signs currently flatblack on the one side but the other side escaped the graffiti madness so it could still be considered an "improper" school bus artifact for me to have...

I'm curious too, what others have to say...

While (IF) it's a law I'm breakin' -- I don't give a sh!t... BUT, I DO like to know if/when I'm choosing to break a law...

And when I fully retire I can turn the clock back to 4:20... :flowers:

I was originally going to keep mine and convert the stop signs into smiley faces. But the urge to delete useless stuff on my bus and simplify the project was just too strong.
