Good question. I have no idea, but I do know that the bus would initially be titled as a bus and not a motorhome until the conversion was far enough along for California to re-classify it.

You forgot that a Class A license also requires a physical evaluation. I read the federal standards that define that exam, and it specifically screens out drivers with musculoskeletal disabilities...

Great, but California law has no such exemption, as far as I know. I posted shots from the applicable California RV handbook.

Hydraulic brakes. As much as I would prefer air brakes for the extra safety margin, my license class - California Class C - doesn't allow for that. In theory, I could self-certify for a...

Hi there, fellow and prospective Skoolies!

Greetings.

2 friends and I are on the verge of buying a 38 foot 1999 International with a DT466 and Allison 2500-series auto transmission, and a wheelchair lift. (I'm in a power wheelchair.)

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

I wonder how much a piece of land that was big enough for a covered concrete pad to park a bus on (and preferably, a small shed, with electric, water, and sewage hookups, if not too far from town)...

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

Regarding the CA 'Clean Diesel" requirements, some deeper reading led to this:

Q: What vehicles are exempt from the Truck and Bus regulation?

A: The regulation exempts military tactical support...

Re: Bus interior dimensions?

nat_ster - Thanks for the info on the interior width for a typical Bluebird. Getting a "wide load" sign is an option, but buses sold here (in the USA) do not typically get up into 11+ feet in width,...

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

bansil - Owning a small plot of land in Texas is not entirely impossible, but why Texas?

familywagon - I just did some research on California's Clean Diesel program, and apparently, if you own or...

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

bansil - How will moving east a state help with harassment on federal BLM land? I'm sure it will work out, I will just have to not only be creative, but also very careful about covering my a$$...

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

bansil - Yes, that article is disturbing. I had read it before you linked it, several months ago. There are some who live in vehicles of all kinds here, and while some respect the area, constrain...

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

A shop that does car alarms and remote starters may be able to wire up the controls to an after-market receiver for a key fob transmitter that would allow one to run the lift from the chair. They...

Why are Crown buses so valued?

Hello again folks. I asked this question farther down in another thread, but I'm not sure how many people saw it.

A couple people are suggesting that when I am ready to get a bus, that I may want...

Re: Overall total conversion costs?

bansil - No, I wouldn't need any adaptive controls. If the parking brake was a tiny pedal right up near the drivers door, I would either need a few seconds to get to it, or a lever, but that's it....

Bus interior dimensions?

I have read that the maxim sizes for a bus in the US are 45 feet long and 8.5 feet wide. Since bus sizes are usually referred to by their passenger capacity, how many would a bus that size be?

Overall total conversion costs?

Hi folks!

Can you help me get a better idea of how much a conversion costs?

I have read that buses bought from dealers often cost 2-3x their otherwise normal value. Does that mean that the...

Re: Gas vs. diesel, which one and why?

Thanks for the opinions, folks!

You've convinced me, when I finally do get my bus, it will be a diesel. :-)
