Re: Old floor heaters

I looped my heater lines behind the driver and removed the middle and rear heat exchangers. Kept it looped so I would still have warm air for the defroster and around the driver's seat while driving....

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

I don't have a picture - but when I first put a silver/gray colored heavy tarp over my bus for temp reduction (same concept) and laying on top of the bus (same execution) it worked.... some. I...

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

If you turn the engine and rear axle around with the engine behind and the axle in "front" you will have 4 reverse and one forward gear. But if you then FLIP the axle so the left side is right and...

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

In the drawbridge concept, you have a raised floor in the cargo area. What if you raised the floor like that, did NOT relocate the rear wheels forward, and put the engine in front of the rears but...

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

What if you tied your island to one side? I'm putting my prep surface\combination eating bar\gray tank cover running from right side to the middle with a 2 foot path around it on the left (that...

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

Why not just move it to the middle of the bus, and build an "island kitchen" over the top of it? No worry about tilting or the turbos, etc. You may not have use of the drawer space all the way down...

Re: Spent REAL winters in your bus? (well below freezing)

Take out windows. Two years ago (in Spokane) we were getting pretty dang cold in the Bluebird. Last winter (yes, it got to -10 at my property) is was better. Two years ago the difference between...

Re: Anyone in Eastern WA / Northern ID?

Aha, there you are. Just getting back onto the Skoolie board after a couple months being away. Life intrudes at times.

I think that a nice full timing rig can be done up with a RE bus - my...

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

You COULD work out something with sliding panels and hydraulics, so that the roof lift on Millicent can be variable.... so it drops down a foot or two for parking in the barn *grin*. Think of it as...

Re: Using seat foam for insulation??

I have heard that using an electric turkey knife is good for foam. I use just a basic (but freshly sharpened) chef's knife to cut foam.

I use the styrofoam board for the walls, though. They won't...

Re: To flush or not to flush... that IS the the question. (H2o)

We must have been using different systems, or a different environment. You go, you cover anything in the bucket with sawdust immediately. That takes care of most of the smell right there. You have to...

Re: To flush or not to flush... that IS the the question. (H2o)

I have a composting system setup like in the Humanure handbook - but that is a system. The bucket and sawdust (or whatever organic cover material) is fine for collection, but you HAVE to have a...

Re: The Millicent Chronicles; two foot roof raise, big tailgate

I like it - I have plans for that same modification (folding door into non-folding door) although I don't need to extend the roof upwards. My bus is not going to be so tall!

Re: A bus named Taj

Still haven't figured out what tranny. Other buses from Carpenter from the same vintage use an MT42.... I figure if I get under it and try and find the tags it would be better. I've been too busy for...

Re: Skoolie Newbie... Roof Raise Questions

As Elliot mentioned about diagonal bracing - keep in mind that if you are putting in a few "bulkheads" (for instance - a separator wall between bed and cabin, or walling in a bathroom) that you won't...

Re: How Much Water

The other bit for having some way of stuffing the grey water into the black is to give it a good bit of pressure. When you have a partially filled black tank (for example - you only put 25 gallons...

Re: brake pedal "sticking" w/air brakes?

My bus I just got had angled wooden blocks on both the throttle and the brake - it probably made it easier to step on the brake giving you more leverage (the brake pedal is lower than the throttle)...

Re: What do you know about a Ford 534?

I noticed there is not a HUGE overhang of the back.... probably not a bad idea to keep the front end down. But I was not surprised by huge amounts of power.... basically it had just the right amount...

Re: A bus named Taj

Propane runs (at least at the places I filled) from $2.78 to $3.09 a gallon. So figure it just over a dollar a mile ($1.03 - $1.15/mile). At 5-6 per gallon on diesel (with diesel running around 4.75...

Re: What kind of milleage do you get?

Another propane powered bus in my driveway - this one is a 1975 Carpenter.... National chassis, Ford 534 "Super Duty" engine, and propane powered from the beginning. The 534 Superduty in gas used to...

Re: What do you know about a Ford 534?

So, distilling the web research, it is 277 hp @3200 rpm, 480 ft/lbs of torque around 1800 to 2200 rpm, and 2 to 3 mpg. I can add that running under propane fuel (it was propane since birth - The bus...

What do you know about a Ford 534?

Just got a '75 Carpenter RE bus with a Ford 534, Allison automatic, and (why do I do this?) it has been running on strictly propane all it's life. Seems to have adequate power - nothing stellar, and...

A bus named Taj

I live in a bus - a rather rough conversion of a 35 foot conventional bluebird. Well, today starts another conversion. Again, a 35 footer, but this one (named "Taj" by the previous owner) is a rear...
