I believe you are correct. A grid-tied inverter does the phasing needed to align the sine waves and frequency which does vary from 60 Hz some.

I'd bet that a lot of the problems that drivers have with them is not operating them correctly. They need to be engaged, run, and disengaged at a certain speed that matches their rotational rate.
