It is more than likely a 5.9 with common rail injection with an EGR system on it. Not a bad motor but look for blowby as they have had some issues with breaking rings. Not all of them have the issue...

Check the fuel shut off valve I have seen the rod rust and break and the boot will pull the fuel lever just enough to start and run but you will be down on power.

That appears to be a plug used to access the flywheel and insert a tool that a ratchet fits into and you would spin the motor over with it.

Well I have driven it a little over 1200 miles...

Well I have driven it a little over 1200 miles all looks good and its averaging 12 mpgs changed the oil at 500 miles and its still clean.:bow:

Yes you can drive it with no problems it is just an access plate to get to the flywheel looks like its been off for some time by the oil stain on the mounting surface.
