If you're gonna do it I would go with a 13 speed double overdirve is awsome for highway speed and mileage.. It was a game changer for me . I can pull grades and nearly doubled my mileage .

I would weld. If using pop rivits that take a beating as in your case use backing washers. I would also use stainless rivits and backing washers. Aluminum and steel don't play well together..

Yes Good that that you caught it before it took out the Crank Rod Bearings failure ect. A inframe rebuild kit will be $1600 to $2000. If you can do the work you're better off just doing it watch...
