If you're gonna do it I would go with a 13 speed double overdirve is awsome for highway speed and mileage.. It was a game changer for me . I can pull grades and nearly doubled my mileage .

I would weld. If using pop rivits that take a beating as in your case use backing washers. I would also use stainless rivits and backing washers. Aluminum and steel don't play well together..

I as a rule go about 25% over the wire guage needed.. That way you wont be wondering could I have done that better and safer.. No little naging thoughts should I have done that different..

Yes Good that that you caught it before it took out the Crank Rod Bearings failure ect. A inframe rebuild kit will be $1600 to $2000. If you can do the work you're better off just doing it watch...
