I need to do the same on my 4BT. The location is important. Safest bet is after the turbo (in the exhaust) but the temp readings are very different. From what I recall, the best location for reading...

Drilling and tapping in front of the turbo requires a lot of care. Does not take much metal to totally lunch one. Have heard (on the 4BT Forum) of guys drilling and tapping with the engine running....
