Well,
It seems you all were right about the Wastegate.
It wont budge.

So, I'm looking at getting a new turbo.

So far, I've only found a number of "666745-E" .
Which doesnt get me anything when I looked online.

I am seeing different turbo prices ranging from $450 to over $2000.
Not sure what rhe differences are.

I'm fully capable of swapping it out myself. Just need to get one in asap.

Can anyone direct me to a reputable source for a new/rebuilt turbo?

Thanks!

There is also what looks like Carbon or Soot buildup on the leading edge of the compressor wheel.
And there is a lot of chipping on the leading edge of the compressor wheel.

I'm guessing it's definitely time for a new/rebuilt Turbo. 😥

I am searching the interwebs looking for specific info on my setup. Not an easy task...

I can only find one number on my turbo. The "666745-E" .
This number only brings up websites in Cyrillic!
.
I'm repeatedly finding myself on jmturbo.com , when looking for a 3116 turbo.
They have one listed for 230hp for less than $500.
Is this all that's out there?
.
Still looking for a rebuild shop. Might have to wait till Monday morning to make phone calls...

Thanks for the link!

I am not impressed by the reviews for jmturbo. Not good odds at all with them...

That link you posted finally gave me a part number to use too! S2EGL070

was just giving the first link that google gave me. but i looked aroud. 900-1100 is about what you're looking at spending for a reman.

Well that's a good chunk of my problems searching. I don't use Google anymore.
I'm trying Google now - much better results.
Still be monday before I can some calls...

But on another note- start asking around and seriously find a guy that knows that injection system on the 3116. A guy with the know how and tools makes all the difference. Those engines will go a long time with the right maintenance.

glad you seem to have your problem figured out and on your way to a resolution.

ONWARD!

I don't know him all that well, but I sort of have a neighbor where I'm staying next summer that is an old diesel mechanic.
He's very revered when it comes to older stuff.
But, I would have to get the bus there first! Lol
I'm wintering near Yuma and don't know anyone down here!
.
I'm reading up on everything I can though!

Since I am just sitting here on my bum, waiting on diagnostic tools to get here, I took off the Turbo.
I was hoping the wastegate was accessible.
It is not...
Oh well.
I performed a regulated air pressure test on it, it seems to be moving now. I put it back on.
I also got the new primer pump in today's mail. Yay!
.
I put that on.
.
Test drove it.
Better, the turbo is kicking in at higher RPM now, unlike before where you couldn't hear or feel it all. I am thinking the wastegate is sticking or not fully opening/closing.
.
The primer pump was definitely part of the issue.
.
As soon as the guage kit gets here, I'll confirm the fuel pressure and the turbo pressure.
Hopefully it is only one problem left and not two issues!
.

Are these updates wanted? I like it when someone posts a resolution to a problem, so years later I can read the archived stuff and see what they figured out...

feed back on problem solutions

OH **** yes it helps!

yea good to know what the problem is, and what was done to solve the issue.

waste gates.... some seem to seal up better that others when at "low boost".

This means, if the gate is cracked open/bent/warped/stuck you never get all of the exhaust pressure at the turbine. Results in a "laggy" or "slushy" turbo response, kinda like the engine is more noodle than power plant.

Also means might not ever make "maximum boost". I have had to take a turbo...years and years ago. and put the turbo on the workbench and fiddle/adjust wastgate linkage get that damn "flapper" door to shut and close "tight". I ended up slotting the holes on the diaphragm and push the valve harder into the gate valve to get it closed.....

now here is a risky piece of knowledge... if you install a "TEE" fitting then add a little tiny gate valve to the tee... you bleed off some of the manifold pressure to the turbo waste gate. That makes the waste gate "think" it is not yet time to open the waste gate. Over do this and you might blow a head gasket.... or break pistons. A safe thing to do is use the bleeder valve to get to maximum boost as listed in the service manual.... You are blueprinting the boost, to get at least design performance out of the engine...

hear is where to add fuel... You can over do this... more power always means not last as long. but that mean 250,000 instead of 300,000 miles

Okay! I'll keep this thread updated then.
.
Thanks all for the additional info and the link to the turbo website.
.
I have my fingers crossed that my guages will get here by Friday and I can determine exactly what the issue is over the weekend.
.
I've been watching Adept Ape videos all evening.
.
I think I'm starting to wrap my head around the differences between Gasser and Diesel setups.
I am starting to pick up the Diesel specific lingo too, that really helps getting stuff figured out.

Yep.
keep that injection system happy and that engine should provide years of service. Its really the only bad thing about the 3116. That injection setup requires lots of skill and special tools.

I've had wastegates stick before, typical results in no/low boost scenarios. Remove the diaphragm rod, and work the lever back and forth, maybe spray some penetrating oil where the lever goes into the housing while you're at it.

Very rarely do you see where the actual wastegate valve is damaged. Most of the time it's in the lever to housing bore and caused by rust or crud. Any penetrating oil you use will burn off after startup, so don't be surprised by smoke.

Just an update...

I finally got all my gauges in the mail!

I also have a mobile mechanic coming over on Thursday.

Can’t wait to get it scooting along again.

I’ll keep you all posted on what happens!
Thanks for all the assistance so far.
