2000 Bluebird bus 38' long

$14,000 Bus is in good running condition. 5.9 Cummins engine.
Automatic Transmission. Air brakes. Interior has been removed except for the plywood floor. As you can see the front entrance door has been removed. I have a new RV door that can go with the bus.

The raise looks like the hat channel was butt-end welded. As best as I could expand the image, it looks like there might be about a 4" piece of "C" channel welded in the place where the butt-welds were made. The welding looks good.


How many inches was it raised?


Any idea which "automatic" transmission it is? (Not the name: Allison, the model)

I'm quite confident it is an Allison transmission. The hat channels are 16" long. (That's how high the roof is raised.) Each hat channel has an apx. 4" long inner u shaped metal piece at each end. The first 2" of is welded to the hat channel. The other 2" of the u shaped piece goes inside the bus's hat channel at the top and the bottom of the 16" hat channel extension piece. Then I clamped and welded each of the two joints on each hat channel. The welds should be good and strong.

Almost every bus on the road has an Allison transmission. The question is what specific model of transmission, with the AT545 being bad and all others being at least good (with the MT643 and the MD3060 being great).

I am about 40 minutes away from Abbotsford.
I am a class 1 commercial driver and would be happy to have a look at your bus and offer opinion on condition for anyone here serious about buying. This may benefit and help with a sale having an unbiased opinion to relay to prospective buyers that can't see it in person. Just putting that out there!
Seems like a reasonable starting point on price considering amount of work you have completed. The current exchange rate on the dollar could make that a good deal for a US buyer.

$10,000 CAD is $7100 in United Statesian cash right now. The bus has a relatively weak engine for a big bus and the transmission is probably an AT545, not a great drive train for a skoolie. The bus raw material is maybe worth $2000-$3000, so is a partly-completed roof raise and panels riveted on the back end (I did similar things on my back end and I understand how much work is involved in that many rivets) worth $4000? People who can and want to do their own roof raise would say no, but I doubt you could get any professional fabricator to do it for anywhere near that little (ten grand or more seems more likely). So this is not a bad deal - particularly for tall people who aren't welders - although it would certainly be more appealing if the side panels were riveted on and the transition in the front was completed.

Have you also done some basic preventive maintenance, like fluid and filter changes, new batteries etc.?

That’s a really good price for a bus in Canada (As long as the bus is in good enough shape) and with all that work done it’s a huge time saver as long as it’s decent quality work. Could be a great buy for somebody close to him since you wouldn’t want to drive that too far as it is. Roscodude77, you might want to find out for sure which model transmission it has. Even if it has an at545 I think it’s a good price; could even be a md3060 in there. If you get the vin and type it into bluebirdvantage.com it might tell you.

Note for anyone in the US considering it, you’ll want to ensure you can import an altered vehicle into the USA because if it was the other way around you can’t import an altered vehicle into Canada.

I just imported from the US to Canada, it's a commercial vehicle and ya it's a big deal, the vehicle must be completely stock as built before they will even consider importation so I imagine that rule could go both ways. I would want all that info before buying anything and getting screwed at the border. If you're considering a Canadian purchase contact US customs and get the facts.

I wonder to what extent my bus would be considered "altered" as opposed to just "repaired", in terms of being allowed to be imported into Canada. Does even removing the seats disqualify a school bus?

Ok, fair to call me out on that. If its 25 years old there is no inspection for us customs. I don't know the rules for under 25 years old
