Question

Interested in the answer to the engine question as well, and what is the mileage? Tire tread? Registered as RV or bus? Thanks!

Explain this to an amateur please??

Older buses often have an allison 545. It doesn't have a locking torque converter so at highways speeds and up inclines it slips causing friction and heat. It also has NO engine braking to speak of when descending steep roads in the mountains.
THis bus most likely has a better transmission.
But a 2000 wouldn't have a C7 engine. Maybe a 3126.

So far, I am gleaning from all the opinions that there is a sweet spot of bus years around the years 1999-2002? Problems like you described in older busses, and more complex modern problems of later year models?

Hello Mandinee1
As ECCB was explaining there are many who don't like the 545 transmission. There are also many very happy with theirs. There where many school districts that ordered that transmission on their buses because they are cheaper$$ and if you're ordering many and don't have a lot of hills in your district that can really add up$$ They are not well thought of for mountain driving but if you are on the flatlands or planning on a parked tiny home it may not be a deal breaker for you. The 3126 Cat engine was produced from 1998 thru 2003 so that is why I questioned what engine was in it (unlikely a school district would swap in a C7) I'm not saying it didn't happen just don't see why. The C7 can have its issues also, can be very pricey for parts and repairs.
Good luck in your search and don't rush, ask lots of questions here.

Cheers
Curtis
