2001 blue bird Re 8.3 Cummins with problems

Oregon, that would be a heck of a drive home! What would hugh mikes br considered on these 8.3 engines?

"would hugh mikes br "... Not sure I can speak to that.

I read somewhere that the B50 number in normal duty is 500k miles and in severe duty 350k miles.

Mine has 170k and is strong with no notable blowby or oil consumption or oil leaks.

Hey Anewbus, are you in south Mississippi? I'm assuming there is only one Pearl River Community College which is a few miles from my old hometown.

The Oregon bus looks nice but it's not highway geared and doesn't have air ride. You can see the springs in the pictures that look like non air ride. The PRCC bus probably has air ride front and back and is probably geared better. If you can talk them down any and get the engine fixed it will probably be very nice. Very nice. What the mechanic told you sounds reasonable. And if it's south Mississippi you don't have to worry about rust. Mold maybe but no rust!

Sounds like you're investigating it well. Try to find the shop that maintained the bus and talk to them. I'm trying to think if I have any cousins down there that are diesel mechanics, but I don't remember any.

Cool. I'm originally from Picayune. Haven't lived there in many years.
The pictures look nice. Clean. Looks like they do maintenance on campus so I'm sure it's well maintained- the other bus said they service it every 5k miles so there's that.

Good luck! Did he tell you what the reserve was?

I haven't actually talked with him over the phone just email. I tried calling Friday but didn't get an answer but left a msg. I'd like to be able to go see the bus before the auction gets close to ending.

I'd be interested in that, but I just made that 3k mile trip, I'll be damned if I do it again any time soon, next one will be closer to home hopefully.

I shouldn't have looked.. but I did.. anyway, I see that Uintah school district in Vernal UT has a handful of Blue Birds for sale on Public Surplus. All are scheduled to end this Sunday at 5 PM Mountain time. There are a 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010 all with rear 8.3L Cummins and starting price at $6k for the older and $8k for the newer.

Can anybody identify what is the belt-driven accessory at lower right in the photo below? This is from the 2010 unit mentioned above.

My 2002 A3RE with 8.3, MD3060 and 170k miles was a bit over $3800 including auction fees.

How was the rust? this one doesn't look rusty and doesn't leak oil. I see these deals all of you talk about. but i cannot find another 8.3 md3060 to compare it to in auction except the one stated in the beginning of this thread. Tennessee is a hard place to find an 8.3 RE

No body or chassis rust. Very minor surface rust in a few spots on the floor. No repair needed. Just a bit of Ospho and some paint.

I guess ill have to hold at 7k then. or wait. either im fine with. since the conversion will be most of the cost.
