I have a 2005 DT466e with 210K miles on it. I had some codes related to High Side to Low Side open on cylinders 1 through 5, and noticed an oil leak on the wiring harness. I took the injector harness off, degreased it, dried it out, and reinstalled it.

Previously the warn engine light would come on while driving or climbing, and then would go off while coasting or coming to a stop.

Now the bus tries to crank but won't turn over.

The RPM on the dash goes to about 150.
Oil Pressure on the Dash climbs up to 50psi

I am not sure if I have a faulty IDM, a wiring harness has gone bad, or maybe a sensor is not working.

Does anyone have ideas on what could be causing this?

What are the DTC codes?
Using my ScanGauge D and ChatGPT this is what I got

IDFMCNTChatGPT Decode
11400ECT sensor signal out of range
530653Short circuit to battery voltage on the unit injector low side
354Low side to high side open - cylinder 3
650Low side to high side open - cylinder 6
152Low side to high side open - cylinder 1
455Low side to high side open - cylinder 4
4151High side to low side open - cylinder 4

Not enough info, you not using the best tools...
You spent money on a bus and it WILL break down AGAIN for sure...do yourself a favor and at least get Servicemaxx and a Nexiq clone.

Do you know how to pull codes using the dash diagnostic button?
If not, google it, it is a common thing to do.

Crank and nop start could be from a few different things gone wrong, there is no one size fits all approach here...guessing is too expensive.

My bus, DT466e, had a similar issue and it turned out to be my IPR...only $450 bucks to get a new one.
I had servicemaxx and there was very little to no guessing that time.

I bought one of the clones online, but it doesn't talk to my bus when I try to run ServiceMaxx. Which version of servicemaxx were you using? I tested the plug at the IPR, and it showed voltage. I will run out and do a resistance test, which looks like it should be about 10 ohms if it is still in spec.

Showing voltage is good but that is only 1/2 of the equation. If the IPR is bad, having voltage means nothing. Besides, it's way to early to condemn the IPR...

Please pull codes via the diagnostic button and let us know what you get.
Otherwise nothing can be done.... Guessing is not the way....

Using the cruise buttons, it shows 2 faults on the dash.

14: 2
2033-14p

150: 1
2023 - 14p

During cranking, do you have/see any engine RPM on the dash?

Those 2 codes are body codes...both inactive.
We need to read the engine codes.

Navistar SPN 2023 FMI 14 indicates a communication fault with the Engine Control Module (ECM). Specifically, it signifies a loss of communication between the ECM and either the primary or secondary electronic gauge cluster (EGC). This often stems from issues within the electrical system, such as blown fuses, wiring damage, or bad connectors.

spn2023 fmi14 is the gauge cluster fault.

try unplugging the gauge cluster and after a couple of minutes plug it back in and see if everything works. if it does, the problems will come back. but look for a corroded up connector in the harness by the firewall with like 5-6 wires in it.

A Navistar fault code SPN 2033 FMI 14 indicates a communication issue within the vehicle's electronic control system, specifically between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and other modules. FMI 14 generally points to a problem with the wiring or electrical system, rather than a failure of the specific component being monitored. This code typically suggests a communication failure, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact faulty component.

Why exactly would your nexiq clone not work?
Does the grenn light turn on?
Does the data light blink?
Are you selecting the correct engine when you turn on Servicemaxx?

So far, these codes are body codes, not engine codes. Without actual DTC we are at a turkey shoot, blindfolded!

Your scan gauge talked to the ECM so I am gonna prematurely say your ECM is ok.
This is supported by seeing your rpms move on the dash when you crank and the fact that it evens cranks.

IDM issues...too early to tell.

datalink issues, I don't think so because your scan gauge read the ecm. It could maybe be an issue with your wiring harness, too early to tell but on the oh chit list.

I do not know if your bus model has a body control module...If your not sure just simply call an International Stealer parts dept, give them the vin, and ask them. also ask them for a build sheet while you are at it.

Right now there are too many variables to consider and more info is needed, primarily DTC codes...

BTW, I am NOt a mechanic but I do own two RE Amtran busses both with DT466e. A 1999 and a 2005 so I have made it a purpose/mission to learn as much as I can because I refuse to pay top dollar for crap I can do myself, besides, it gives me lot's of comfort when I go on the road and breakdown... It has happened!

I was able to get the clone to work a bit with the Diesel Laptop Diesel Explorer software, which is further than I have been able to get in the past with ServiceMaxx J1708, I think I might need the J1939 version of servicemaxx.

The green light does come on.

When I was using Diesel Explorer the yellow light came on as well. But the yellow light does not come on with ServiceMaxx J1708

The only thing that the Diesel Explorer pulled was:
SourceCodeCountDescription
Engine #1 (0)524287-31127See Diesel Repair - Not Available or Condition Exists

When I tried to use their Diesel Repair lookup tool, nothing showed up for that code. And it doesn't seem like anything on the J1708 protocol comes through on the laptop.

Do you have a green 9 port or a grey 6 port on your interface in your bus?
I have the 9-port J1939 connector. I was able to program my scangauge to show a few more parameters.

I had a mechanic come out last night to connect their computer tool to the bus, and they weren't able to get the injector buzz test to fire, so they think it might be the wiring harness that I tried to degrease so I have a new harness coming tomorrow. Once that is installed we will see if it starts, or move onto the next step of troubleshooting.

You may have a 2005 bus but what year is the engine? The J1708 should cover up to 2006 and like ewo1 asked, the engine selection is different for a 2004 vs 2005-6

It's the DT466 with EGR, so I believe the engine is 2004, and the body build was 2005.

How do I select an engine in J1708? I tried to connect to the adapter and open the comlink, but it never discovers anything.

Egr should be on a 2005, but you should tell when you get connected. Should be DLCII I6 for 2005,
DLC I6 2004..
Did you run the nexiq device tester program that was on the disk after connecting to the port?
Be careful unplugging the clone from the laptop(?). I fried a clone but not closing the program first.

The free version of J1708 servicemaxx won't work on a J1939. You need the dealer version with a dealer account. Assuming you have that version, you have to select the interface first and select Nexiq USB adapter in the file menu first. Then you can do the connect, and it will connect up to the engine.

The J1708 version was given out free for diagnoses because dealers don't want to really work on such old vehicles any longer unless they know exactly what to fix so they sort of leave that up to you to figure out. They are still making money on J1939 vehicles so no free version of servicemaxx for those.

Yeah, that was kind of the conclusion I had come to as well, and don't feel like spending $1K on a software package... I have a new injector harness coming in the mail tomorrow. I am going to put it on and see what happens
