366 Engine Question

With a 366 Chevy big-block (tall deck motor if it matters) equipped with a Holley 4bbl, governor-controlled carb (model 4152EG I believe), can the carb be replaced with a "regular" Holley 4bbl carb? If so, what CFM? As I understand it this engine is an "unbalanced" creature which is why I assume the need for a governor - to prevent it spilling it's guts everywhere. Maybe I am wrong. But could I simply utilize a tach and a regular carb to accomplish the same thing? And what would the "redline" be for that engine.

I'm New to Skoolies but not to BB Chevy. I may be wrong but the Redline on a 366 Big Block should be around 5500 RPM. I don't see what would be wrong with going with a regular Carb. You will have to watch the RPM's. Maybe install a Rev Limiter to make sure you don't Over Rev your Motor. (Just a Thought)

I wouldn't top 4500RPm with it and I'd be happier below that...the engine might well be fine at 5K, but the transmission may not like it!

Now that engine is as rotationally balanced as any other, the problem is 4 of the 8 intake runners flow straight to a cylinder wall and the other 4 right into the middle of the cylinder where they are supposed to flow hence the unbalanced part ( flow ). With the right parts that engine can turn 9500 rpm. A regular Holley or quadrajunk carb will work but why do you need to change it, I have 2 of them with the governed carbs and never have a problem (650 CFM I think). You planning on turning a lot of R's? Find a later model bus and steal the fuel injection unit and manifold off it, now you will have something. Manufacturers put that engine in dump trucks and grain trucks and you will NEVER run your bus as hard as they are run (think 17,000# truck with 40,000# of grain or rock) sportyrick
