Hi All,

I want convert a short flat nose (9 or 10 window) and was looking at IC units with DT466 but there is a large number of ISB 5.9s for this size.

I am not moving in but creating an RV replacement for my slide in camper (currently on a 5.9 24v diesel pickup).

This will be moving more then parked so I am looking for driving performance for sorter road trips to National Parks etc.

Is a 5.9 good enough?

Also do these FE short buses ever have Allison 3060s (so I can get 6th gear)?

My thought is these 9-10 window units are lighter and might be happy with a 5.9...

Thanks in advance, Pete

Welcome Pete,

What year buses are you looking at? I have seen later model buses that size with the Allison 2000 (5/6 speed) series transmission but never a 3060.

I am sure that if a customer asked for the 3060 that the manufacturer would build it. Not sure why someone would spec a 3060 in a shorter bus though.

I saw some buses like that with 5.9's and 3060's. Out in CO on Public Surplus.

Nothing specific, just the short flat nose. They seem to be in the 2002-2005 range. Also I would like to avoid DPFs and such complications if possible.

5.9 my short bus

I have a 1954 ford short bus, just under 23 feet long - seven meters, I expect a weight of 11,000lbs - 5,000 kg

I am using a 5.9, six speed manual transmission 3.73 gears expected road cruise speed 65mph,105kph and turning 1875 rpm in 6th,

down shift to 5th at 65mph,105kph will give 2525rpm

cummins 12 valve hot rodded to 350hp , 260Kw and 800 ftlbs, 1084Nm

with all I have checked into and people that I have spoken with, videos I have watched, threads I have read and based on my own experience, I am expecting this to work to the tune of about 11mpg to 14 mpg or 20L to 25L per 100 kilometers.

Hmm magnakansas,

You have me thinking 11,000 lbs?

I have limited my search to 8-10 window flat nose buses. They seem to have a GVWR of 30K (just like the big ones). My question is how much less is the empty weight of a 8-9 window bus vs a full 38-40ft bus?

Pete

really empty weight

Currently as it sits, my bus is 6,200 lbs. Two seats, full body, wheels, tires, brakes, one 30 gallon propane tank, empty fuel tank, no engine, no transmission, no radiators, no charging system at all, no air conditioning system at all, no fuel on board, The engine, bare is 1,000 lbs, transmission is expected to be 450 lbs, so that is up to 7,650 lbs add 700 lbs for seats, 8150lbs
add 300 lbs for air compressor, tanks, and other parts for the air ride system. 8450lbs 80 gallons of fuel 554lbs 9,000lbs ten people at 200lbs each 11,000 lbs

there is another fellow out there with a bus very very similar to mine same engine, same transmission.... he said the weight comes out to about 11,000 for him. The numbers seem to add up me.

keep in mind my is 1954. and bumper to bumper is 22 feet 9 inches.

I have yet to hit the scales...but, I am hoping to come in at about 8,000 or slightly less with my '46 Chevy 21 footer. Really not all that much there.
