62 c60 with 8.3

I'm going to look at an 8.3 with an Allison behind it tonite. Are there any tags or identifying marks I can look for to make sure this is an 8.3 and Allison? It's supposed to be out of school bus and has complete wiring harness.

There should be a data plate on the front gear cover by the injection pump.

That will give you a bunch of info like displacement, model #, serial #, advertised power, etc.

Is there anything on the trans?

The transmission will have a plate also. It's likely it's covered in dirt.... But with a little soap and water you should be able to get the model from it.

Cummins and Allison both have the ability to find specs based on the unit's serial number. If you can read the serial number you can probably read the rest of the data plate though!

It's a 1992 8.3 with a mt643 trans. The truck has a 2 speed rear, with 7.2/ 5.87? Gears. Is this rear end going to work this engine/ trans? If not,What gears should I look for?

Excellent engine, excellent trans, but a terrible rear gear.

Top speed will be about 50 mph with it.

Depending on cost, it might be worth keeping based off the engine and trans, and then swapping the rear gear for something more highway friendly. You'll want something in the 3.xx with that combo to cruise at 65 correctly.

looks like the rear has low or super granny low.
this wouldn't be a good rear end on the interstate.

He has 62 c60 in the title so I imagine the bus is a 1962 C60 and it originally had a gas engine that someone swapped with a 1992 8.3/mt643. That would explain the 2 speed rear axle with those gear sets installed.

It struck me as odd.

Get the rear gears somewhere in the realm of reality and you will have a classic with an awesome drive train.
