I think this is a new insurance question... I live in MD, bus is registered and insured in MD. Everything was fine until the MVA (can't even call themselves DMV like a normal state) my insurance company asking to verify liability insurance. I have storage insurance as I'm not driving the bus. I have it parked on a military base so it has to have insurance. It does. It doesn't have all the state mandated minimums for liability.

Maryland charges a $150 fee plus $7 a day for lapses in insurance. You have to turn in your tags when you sell a vehicle or drop the insurance. I've been hit with a $600+ fine before. THIS STATE SUCKS. DON'T MOVE HERE. EVER!!

I want to leave the bus insured for storage only but keep it tagged. I have a feeling they are trying another money grab, so here's the question... Does anyone know what the insurance requirements are for the famous Vermont bus tagging? Anyone know about Michigan? I have a rental house in MI that I could use as an address.

Just got off the phone with VT DMV. They do not monitor insurance. In fact, she said you don't even have to have insurance on a vehicle to register it. You do have to have insurance if you are driving on VT roads. It's up to law enforcement to 1) catch you 2) to enforce it.

Looks like I might need to go find the VT registration thread.

Oops, apparently I posted in the wrong section as well.

So, how many have kept the VT plates and renewed; any issues?

I've been bit by that one as well. If you got tags hanging off of it, it's gotta be insured. Doesn't matter if it ever sees road time. It has to be inspectable also, but getting busted for anything more serious than a burnt light is rare.

VT insurance required, but not enforced

Vt does not monitor insurance.

I know some states, like Mass and NY I think, have insurance companies report to the DMV when your insurance lapses (mostly non payment of monthly bill), and your plate is then cancelled.

Vt does not require insurance at registration. It is required during inspection, and if pulled over. I have never inspected my MH here in 5 years, but rarely drive it in state so never got pulled over.

I recall NH does not require insurance even if driving! Thats weird!

I would never drive without insurance: storing a vehicle without insurance? every winter my VW Thing sits uninsured in the garage.

You Army

N.H. does not require conventional insurance, Unless- After being involved in an accident
Being convicted of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Being convicted multiple times for reckless driving
Being convicted of a traffic violation that triggers a review

Also while conventional insurance is not required you still have to prove "financial responsibility" which means having enough cash, bond, or other type insurance. You can't just drive without insurance and be legal.

Scoot over I'm moving in!! Been awhile since I lived in a real state.

If the base didn't require it, I'd just turn in the tags. It certainly won't fit in my driveway. And parking it on the street in front of the house would pis$ off the neighbors (not that I care) but also requires it to be tagged.
