About to start my conversion, seeking general tips and tips for a gillig phantom most of all.
I know I'll need new tires, radiator hoses and possibly new batteries (I hope to revive them)

take care of your transmission!! treat it nicely.. esp if its the ZF or Voith

This puzzles me.....

There are tons of transit buses on the road with Voith transmissions in the US but service and parts seem to be scarce as unicorn farts...

Transit buses don't really wander - there might be 500 of them in the city, but they all go to the same 2 garages for service. It's not exactly that there aren't any mechanics out there for them, there just aren't any /commercial/ mechanics out there for them.

I know this is a bit old, but we wondered if you've made progress on your Phantom? That's one sweet bus, with the custom windows and all, so we're anxious to see where you go (went?) with the conversion.
