So I bought an 80% complete Skoolie which did not have a deck. Is there any way to add one once the ceiling is done? Thanks

It could be done using Rivnuts, but I wouldn't do it that way. I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything less than 3/8 (10mm) bolts and nuts with lock washers through the hat channel legs.

And if your insurance carrier ever saw a roof deck on your bus, you would be dropped like a hot potato.

Roof deck?

What are you guys talking about a roof deck, like a porch on the side of a two story house, a place to be and hang out up high instead of ground level? Need rails, could be made removable, I suppose. Deck surface has to be sturdy, also. Anyway, I'd be interested in seeing such a thing. Idle curiosity. If anyone has a link, kindly share, please. My principal interest on being on the roof of my rig is to secure solar panels. Interested in seeing links to rigs where this has been done, also.

I use the rivnut or nutsert type of fasteners. With the thickness of the sheet steel on a bus they will be fine as long as you double the normal amount of the ‘em over though bolts.

Don’t dare call it a roof deck. It’s a “luggage carrier”

I added a deck to my Skoolie after finishing the ceiling, and it worked out fine. I had to reinforce the roof to handle the extra weight and cut some holes for the new mounting points. It’s a good idea to check with a professional if you’re unsure about the structure. It’s a bit of extra work, but definitely doable!

rivet nuts and plates. right on the hat channel. seems very solid to me. Disclaimer this is a solar panel holder and ground plane for my ham radio antenna:whistling:. I used flatten expanded metal for covering the areas so i can access the whole roof to check on things.
