advise on changing flexplate/flywheel please

I believe ther starter on the T444E interchanges with the one from the powerstroke 7.3 of the similar year. , i seem to remember reading that somewhere, you can look at pics of the 7.3 starter to verify thats the case.


the starter is easy to take down on these engines to inspect your gear to see if it will help.

Thanks Christopher. I actually have a ‘99 F350 with the 7.3 so I’ll compare them. I just assumed they were different. That would save some money.

I ordered a starter from DBElectric for $169 shipped which fit and works perfectly! I put it on to move the bus to my house, then took it back off. When I took it off I noticed some worn teeth on the flex plate so I’m ordering that...

I’m gonna probably get the transmission out tomorrow and hopefully the new one going in. Gonna look at the rear seal while I’m in there.

I also tested the Glow Plug Relay. It was bad and not wired properly! She is starting much better now. I’m still gonna test each glow plug once the transmission is done.

I’ve also stripped one of the torque converter bolts. It’s hard to get a tool on those nuts through where the starter mounts. Am I missing anything? You can’t access them from the bottom plate...

as i remember i had to turn the engine by hand with a large socket till each bolt came around to an access hole on the right side of the engine bay (the opposite side from the starter). patience was the key to aligning those bolts with the access hole. thats how i got my flex plate off. i hope its easier for you. good luck.

Mine has an access hole on the driver side to put a tool in from the engine side and pull the comverter nuts.

I’ve got the Allison 2000 bolted up today. Gonna have to shorten the driveshaft by one inch by my measurements. I still have electrical, selector cable, and the lines to run. She’s all bolted up at least! I put on a new flex plate as well.
