I have a medium size bus I do not have anything built into it we use it to take our son to school (in Wheelchair) and deliver balloons. The summer rides can get very warm and we can have the windows open because of the wind it causes I was thinking we could put in a ceiling rv unit but wondering if we can power it from the battery or will we need something stronger? Any other advice on cooling down would be great.

Either you need shore power or a generator. Even RV airs use more power than you can haul in batteries.

2.5KW generator will power a 13,500 BTU AC with no problem plus a few other things.

Just to add... RV AC units come in two flavors.... 13,500 btu and 15000 btu so something to consider is how air tight or resistant it can be to having hot air leak in? If it was me I would always go with the higher btu unit. You can always turn it down.

As for powering it.. Yes you will have to have a generator....so match your loads with your generator selection of your generator. That's another item that's better to have it bigger than needed but that's my line of thinking.

Hope this helps

If you are only going to be in ghastly dry places like NM desserts, you can get by with a swamp cooler built for RVs. THEY ONLY WORK IN AREAS WITH LOW HUMIDITY. So if it rains in your low humidity area, you're screwed. Do internet searches for "RV Swamp Cooler" or "RV Evaporative Cooler". If you do searches for "DIY Swamp Cooler" you will find lots of pages on building your own set up like the last link.

http://www.kooleraire.com/KoolerAire.htm this is a $40 ice chest set up similar to the ones you build yourself. If you have the room and only need it occasionally, this may be what you want.

If you had said WHERE you were, it would have been easier to give you area specific info. Basically a swamp cooler will not work anywhere except desert areas.
