Aladdin Kerosine Lamp

I have an older brushed Aluminum Table Lamp (from early 1980's). It has the steel 10" shade ring and (heavy) Opal Glass shade. I want to put this lamp in my RV. Do you have any suggestions on how I can take this lamp with me with out worrying about the shade falling off and everything getting broken. I would like to not have to pack it up every time I move. It's not an antique by a long shot but it has some fond memories for me. I've had it packed up in a box and stored for the last 5 years. I can shorten it a bit but that won't solve the problem of the glass shade. The shade just sits on a steel ring. I'm thinking of using a bead clear silicone around the lip of the steel ring to attach the glass to it. I don't need to remove the shade to light the lamp. I'm not sure if I will be lighting the lamp. Not only will the lamp light up a 16X16 room (mantle burner) but it will generate a great deal of heat. I think I can come up with a way to attach the base, so that isn't a problem. Just the shade. I found a site with a "steampunk bus" but there was no info on how to secure the glass shades (and I asked... no reply). Have any of you run into this? I also have a 1956 Anniversary clock (glass encased) that my Dad brought back from Germany. I want to put that in the bus as well. Can't run it (has to be perfectly level) but I do want to display it on the fireplace mantle. I figure a little silicone will work there. So what bright ideas do you have???

I have a few more fragile things that I carry that I put in a padded drawer or the closet. Probably wouldn't be too much to put stash the shade away when you are moving and you could keep the lamp out.

1. The lamp itself must be firmly secured. Split kerosene is something you don't want inside a bus...

I wouldn't keep fuel in it. I don't plan on lighting it. I just really want to keep it with me.

2. Do you have a push-on or Loxon chimney?

I have the Lox-on chimney. I have transported it with the chimney & mantles still on it before (and full of fuel). That's not my worry...

3. Do you have a globe (shade)? Mine sat on a simple wire tripod frame attached to the burner...

this is my worry! I have the steel ring ("L" shaped metal ring supported by a wire tripod) and a heavy opal glass shade. The shade weighs a couple of pounds (3 or 4lbs?) I guess I could always pack the shade itself into my cedar wedding chest and tuck a quilt around it. This is how I have transported the shade in the past when we have moved to a new house.

4. Mantles. Buy lots of them (they're still made in Brazil), because the vibration will break them.

Actually they are quite strong. I haven't ever replaced an ashed mantle due to it breaking while I was moving.

I stuck my finger in the ashed mantle by accident...
The cat stuck her paw in the ashed mantle while I was cleaning the chimney in the sink (I don't know why, guess she was just curious... she never touched it again since she got her paw washed to get the stuff off)...
I knocked the lamp over while it was in our storage unit and it landed on the couch cushions so the mantle and the chimney broke (the mantle and chimney were replaced in NC where I had ready access to Aladdin parts at a local antique mall).

I've moved the lamp to 7 houses (3 states) with stops in 3 storage units. I am no more careful with the Aladdin mantles than I was with the silk mantles we used on our Coleman LP gas camping lantern. And those silk mantles would last us 2 or more years of tent & pop-up camping.


I was hoping I wouldn't have to pack the shade up. Still it's not that big of a hassle. Maybe I should make a stained glass shade that is lighter weight? Easier to pack it up for a while.

The second link on the page looked good, but I give you the link for everything.
Quick version, Get some plexi, markers/paint that will work on the plexi, and some black hot glue. Trace your pattern on the back of the plexi (through the glass) with the glue, then fill in with marker/paints.

Or I could just haul out all my stained glass equipment! I will be covering our galley backsplash with art glass (grouted in like tile) and making art glass panels for the bottom section of the windows that we will be keeping (8 or 9 side windows plus the rear windows). Still laying out the pattern. I will also make a art glass surround on the fireplace mantle to go with the windows/backsplash . I will be working on the glass for a while (years?). I do Tiffany style/Copper foil method. Those continuing education classes they give at community colleges are neat.
