Pictures of my build below.

Hi,

I have used Google, different AI's and searched this forum but wasn't able to find my answer:
Can someone tell me if there is a second wire (d+ or I) on my alternator that needs to be hooked up? It doesn't function anymore (it used to) and there is only 1 wire connected: B+ (BATT).

It's a 1994 7.3 IDI Diesel, most likely from Canada (now in The Netherlands :))

Disappointing that nobody responded...

I took my alternator apart and found it: The connection right above BATT is the d+ (which needs 12V to start the alternator).

I have no idea. Last 1,5 years I've driven less than 200 miles so it wasn't needed. So it could be the wire had been missing for a while. No warning light came on by the way

Your alternator looks a lot more like a GM than a Ford. Compare your alternator to the Delco 17si.

Once identified we can troubleshoot.

I agree with Mr P. It does look like a delco alt.
Try to find a wiring diagram for your chassis (Ford,GM, Freightliner…)

Side note: I have a 94 Ford F700. That came factory with a 100A Delco alt.

^ If so, here's some good info. Info claims that alt is available as a one wire, two wire, or three wire. A "one wire" alt would only have the large diameter output wire. Other wiring is described in the info.

If you would like, I can take pictures of the alternator on a 1993 Ford F250 I have, that has the 7.3L IDIT engine. There is variation in the connections between different alternators. Some alternators only have one wire connected to them. The attached image is a page from the factory manual for the 1993 F250 with the 7.3L IDI-T engine
