might sound like a stupid question?
and it might be more of a question for my DMV?
yall know i am building a skoolie for my wife who is a traveling lab tech/nurse and they have been hitting her with back to back deployments with barely enough time to get from one to the other since the virus mess with almost no home time.
my question is does the vehicle have to be in your home state every year for its annual inspection or can it be inspected in another state as long as there standards meet or exceed the vehicles registered state.
the reason this even came to mind is because there is some exhaust modifications i would like to do and i know what i can and cant get away with with where i get my inspections done at home but if i need to have it inspected in another state because she can not get it home or its just not feasible then i need to try to stick to the strictest standards nationwide about the only place i know she will not go is new york unless its a more rural place.
anyone have any experience with this.

I'd ask your local DMV but I'm guessing most will not accept an out of state inspection. I know when I lived in Arizona and had to do emissions testing every other year it could only be done there.

Maybe look into transferring your registration to Vermont that has no inspection requirements?

Vermont does have inspection requirements, it's just that it's not an issue if you never actually travel to Vermont since only Vermont LEOs would care if the bus has been inspected or not. Which I imagine would apply equally to any state's inspection process.

That's good information. I knew you could register there without an inspection but I didn't know about periodic. I assumed incorrectly. Arizona wouldn't renew your tags until the emissions inspection was complete and in their system.

if the inspection tag says "federal annual inspection" then any state will do if it says " north Carolina annual inspection " then it has to be north Carolina . the federal is only for commercial vehicles so im betting its a state thing so your stuck . you can do it early if you happen to be back

my big bus i have to do the DOT/FMCSA inspection because they are the only ones that will touch which i have no problem with because i know that they know what they are looking for with the air brakes and heavier duty suspension.
might go that route for hers as well?

Annual Fmcsa inspections are usually only required for commercial vehicles with a dot and/or Mc number. I've never seen that as a requirement for a private rv. Those forms are readily available on Amazon and can be done by anyone who meets regulation Section § 396.19.

A similar inspection is done by any state commercial vehicle enforcement officer or fmcsa federal officer during a random roadside or periodic terminal inspection. Often called cvsa inspections because if you pass you can get a little sticker for the truck/bus that makes you exempt from future randoms for 3 months.

The items a state inspection looks at for registration are probably very similar but it wouldn't be a "dot inspection"

As far as I know based on my experience. Sometimes I'm wrong :)

state inspections have to be done at a facility that is licenced or approved by that state

There are many different types nspection requirements, just as there are many states
(OHIO = NO inspection at all.
This is for body conversions, ie bus to RV, comm truck to RV)

yes i understand and the only reason i do that with my big bus is everyone else likes they are scared of it even though i am registered and tagged as a bus for personal use.
no problems though because the mechanics or cool and let me crawl around with them and if they see something they will say you might want to look at that before next year and the next year i show up and have it replaced.
my concern is for my wifes shorty if/when she doesnt make it back to NC with her shorty for inspection time.
could it be inspected in that state under there standards?
would they inspect it under NC standards?
or i just finally use some vaction time put her in a room for a week and fly to wherever to drive back acrooss NC lines to get an inspection and take it back to her?
i want to get rid of the muffler.
the cats are doing there job so no emission problem there.
if its a little louder which it shouldnt be because of the cats until one fails but they dont fail open they get clogged unless i have rodded them out.
i can add a smaller muffler.
true dual exhaust is out of the question unless i spend more and not including my free labor than i paid for the bus to make duals happen?
the factory exhaust goes directly to a single at the tranny bellhousing and the cats are bolted directly to the exhaust manifolds and no way to get the drivers side down that side until after the tranny?
the damn muffler in it now is behind the rear axle and crammed up in the middle between the frame rails.
pipe is collected and ran down the passenger side and then crosses over to the big ass muffler and exits on the driver side?
the muffler is bigger than a spare tire.

This. If you're running it as a commercial vehicle then those annual inspections can be performed anywhere, usually any truck service facility and even some on-call roadside services will come to you.

If registered private RV, only depends on if your registered state requires annual inspections and then will need to return to that state to satisfy. Some states only care about cars not larger trucks and RVs and some have no inspection requirements at all. Leave it to Indiana to do both - NW counties near Chicago have inspections but rest of the state not.

I think that's been pretty much explained just wanted to boil it down.

The FIRST STEP HERE

Go to the actual LAWS that the DMV operates under. See what the law says about the inspection when the vehicle is not physically in the state. With my personal vehicles while I was in the military I only had to worry about inspection stickers when I was in the state where the vehicle for tagged and plated. If I returned to the tagging state I had a window in which I had to get the inspection done.
So go the the law and see what it says.

No annual inspections here. WA state.
If your bus is legal in the state it is licensed in, then it is legal in 49 other states.
