So, have a 95 Thomas west coast-er.

Full size, air brakes.

The pads on the rears are shot, I've managed to find replacement shoes.

I've had the wheels off, but never the brake drum.

Is there more to it than pulling the rims and bonking the drum off?

While trying to find shoes, a shop was telling me they'd need to replace the inner wheel seals and outer wheel gaskets "when they did the job", in that exceptionally condescending way.

The brake shop was great, btw, they do relines and had my set on the shelf already-travelled across four states looking for these, and everyone said all those were ground to dust by now.

Anyway, yeah. What's the process to get the drum off these beasts?

Good afternoon, I'm not sure which axels you're running, but on my rockwell axels, you have to pull the center hub bolts out to remove the drum. you might lose a bit of oil from around the axel unless you do one side at a time as to lean the axel the opposite way. a new gasket may be required if damaged on removal. Permatex gasket sealer also is a good thing to help prevent future leaks. good luck, you can handle it.

Ah yeah, it is a rockwell axle.

So the center hub comes off with the drum? Or hub, then drum?

I believe the hub and drum are one component. I used a strap and engine hoist to remove my drum as they are very heavy. Please don't let it drop on your foot. the hoist sure made it easy to reinstall that heavy dude as well.

I uploaded the hubs_bearing_seals section of the amtran service manual...it does not specifically talk about a rockwell diff but in general, they are just about the same as far as removal and maintenance,
