Beach Camping?

Hey all, long time, no post.

At the end of the semester, early May, me and a bunch of people are gonna fly from Boulder back to DC, grab my bus, and take it out here (CO). We want to go beach camping in NC "on the way" back out west, and visit New Orleans. I was looking at Cape Lookout in NC to take the bus to.

Questions:

1) Anyone know anything about Cape lookout, or any similar remote, beachfront places that allow camping?

2) Anyone ever driven a bus on beach sand, and if so, how was it?

3) Anyone know of anywhere to stay in New Orleans that isn't an RV park, or is that my only option?

4) Any recommendations for what to do between NOLA and CO?

Beach sand can vary greatly even from spot to spot along a given strip of beach. Best bet is to check with locals before diving in. But one of the worst case scenarios involves keeping up with the tide. Some parts of the country experience very little tidal change...and in others it can be 20+ feet in a couple of hours. More than a few cars, trucks, campers & buses have been totally lost to rising tides. Padre Island in South Texas is rich in such buried treasure.

I can verify this... Last march we were walking the beach and saw two jeeps trying to pull a suburban out of the water. They had parked it down by the water and got all wasted and passed out... and then the tide came in. Water was up to the bottoms of the windows. Every time a huge wave came it it went just a little farther out to sea. It was a pretty entertaining couple hours watching them try to pull it out themselves. So by all means find a local and ask. I think there might actually be pictures in someones gallery on this forum that had to get a wrecker to pull them out of the beach at south padre. Be CAREFUL

What does it say on the towing insurance? Within 100 feet of the hardtop road or something like that. These things are heavy and my guess is you'd have to pay for towing if you got stuck on a beach. A lot of the tow trucks won't go on the beach so the ones that do are kind of steep.

It's a fantasy of mine to have a floating bus, but I think they call that a boat. Somebody invented everything already.

i think i'd want 4wd before i got on loose sand.

I've taken my 40' FE across some loose sugar sand. It does ok as long as you stay moving. The second you stop in it, you'd better be getting a decent tractor out to unstick the bus.
