Broken outer rear door handle

Ok, so apparently I've gotten superhuman strength somewhere along the way... that or the door handle has decayed over the winter. (I prefer the former explanation) Earlier this week, when I went to open the back door, the handle came off in my hand.

One edge of it, which looks like it had most of whatever epoxy was holding it in place, is still firmly attached to the door; and it still latches just fine, as long as you do it from the inside.

Can anyone suggest a fix, we don't have any bus graveyards nearby so getting a replacement would not be easy.

So far my only idea is to try to chip off the leftover (not sure how easy that would be). Get a short pipe of some kind, drill out a hole about the size of the edges, then cut a line for the points of the square, bend them back a bit, then hammer it on to force the square hole. Not sure how to fasten from there.

Is there some easier method to replace it I'm missing, or a glue/epoxy that might hold the original in place?

Maybe drill a hole in the shaft, and a matching one through the back of the handle... then tap it for threads and bolt it on?

Garage door handles have square shanks. Maybe you can use one of those?

My super human buddy did the same thing to the rear door handle on my old bus (pot metal just ain't what it used to be). I found a "T" shaped handle with a 1/4 " square shaft on epay for $9 delivered. The shaft was too long biut it did not take much to fix that. Good luck

i have one with a square shank that i removed if ya want that. and i think i even know where it is...since i took it off yesterday...

Thanks, guys. We'll check homedepot and see what we find. Failing that, might take you up on that offer chev49. We're off outside Klamath Falls OR at the moment, where the chipmunks know how to work door handles -- good thing ours fell off.
