Building a roof rack

So I would like to add a roof deck. Partly to haul stuff for camping, but once at the campsite, I would like to have a good view. Does anybody have any experience with this? My friends at Texas A&M had Bus 12 (look it up) and it had a cool roof rack, but I was wondering if there was a way to connect it to the roof, or if I have to go down below the bus and weld it into the frame. I plan on extending the bumper out a few feet and making a small deck in the back, but that looks like a simple matter of adding some C channel to extend the frame out and reconnecting the bumper. Will likely be either that plastic wood decking or expand metal for both.
