Hi all,

About to pull the trigger on a 1996 Thomas 40ft RE. Recently found out about about SB 210 here in CA by another user.

Wondering how this affects us all here in CA?

Are we all going to have to comply to smog standards regardless of the year over 14,000 GVWR?

Are there any exemptions that I'm missing?

Why arn't more people talking about this or concerned about it (since it applies to most CA skoolies)?

Thanks!

Thanks, Thats the same article you linked before. But it's only an interpretation of it. I would like a second opinion. Or second interpretation of the bill as it seems rather hard to read/vague.

I just bought a bus yesterday and am reading this. I too am surprised there are no other posts on this subject given many conversions are found in CA. Did you end up buying the bus? Looks like this law will start in 2023. I wonder how difficult it will be to pass the inspection....

Unfortunately, it all seems to begin in CA.
With the current political interest in climate change or whatever buzzword it carries today, if I lived in CA and owned a diesel powered bus I'd sell it now while there is still some value in it.

There is little doubt that in shorter time than not, nobody will be registering any old/vintage diesel powered vehicles in the state of CA for evermore.

However long it takes to spread across the country to the rest of US is yet TBD...

First they came for the fireplaces, but I didn’t have one so I didn’t care. Then they came for the wood stoves, but I didn’t have one so I didn’t care. Then they came for the diesel trucks, but I didn’t have one so I didn’t care. Then they came for the diesel motor homes, but I didn’t have one so I didn’t care. Then they came for the gasoline cars…

Commieforna laws are like a virus. They spread across the USA. The worse they are the faster they spread. Figure in less than 5 years other states will get onto the cali band wagon. Now how far will those other states go. Only the voters can decide that.

Try to keep an eye on what your state officals are trying to do.

Well...there is at least the bright side that the older/vintage buses could get historic vehicle plates and be exempt. All those Crown and Gillig buses might be safe. Small consolation, but it's something. :)

Hopefully that is the "loophole" needed for any/all out of date bus owners in CA.?
How long the environmentally conscious lawmakers allow it, remains to be seen...

one of the things they will do first is stop all new registration of a vehicle class however its pretty tough to force someone to get rid of something they already have.. 25+ year old busses are harder and harder t ofind as these EPA programs give insane amounts of $$ to schools to buy new ones.. if you find one I would buy it and register it ASAP as a vintage vehicle and just hang on to it... even if your plans dont involve converting it right away.. you have it you registered it they will have grandfather clauses to keep the pushback down..

Well, it could be worse, the British parliment is releasing oral flatulence concerning the outlawing of ALL privately owned vehicles by 2050.

Insanity.

The depressing part of it all are the majority of the 'negative' comments. Far too little "Piss off. We'll do what we want", and far too much "This system isn't going to work because of x, y, and z".

They'll make it work. Or make you work your way around it.

Crying that it won't work in 'the country' is not an issue, becuase they'll be happy to transform the entire planet into 'the city'.

People need to stop wasting their time justifying their discontent. "We don't want it because we don't want it" is good enough reason when your government is supposedly representative in nature.
