Hi everyone! Looking to figure out if this should be a red flag for a purchase we want to complete tomorrow. Does anyone know what the part and potential issue is with the circled portion of the image. Thanks in advance!
Looks like the chamber for the air brake. Does it have a rod coming out that connects a linkage? It looks like it is just an accumulation of grease or something leaking oil around it. Check the brake drum on that wheel and make sure it is not soaked with gear oil. Maybe a hub seal went bad.
Thanks Ted, we won't be by the bus until tomorrow for final review for purchase. Any recommendations? Should we take some time to look for the potential leak? Should we look for anything else? The seller did not disclose that as an issue, my husband got under the bus and took the picture. :Thanx:
It appears to me that it is the spring brake chamber for that side of the rear axle. It should look identical to the one of the other side.
All of the grease and yuck is all over the automatic slack adjuster which is making it hard to determine what it is.
There should be a rod going from the chamber to the 'S'-cam on the brakes that operates the brakes.
Slack adjusters by themselves are not terribly expensive or difficult to remove and replace. But if it is isn't something with which you are familiar it is probably best left to a professional to do the job.
