I've got one (AirHead) but have not "commissioned" it yet. Yes, you have to rehydrate the coco coir brick. airhead toilet.com - although I do not see instructions for rehydrating...maybe search YouTube...

Wood stove pellets work too. If you ask for a damaged bag some times they give it to you.

We used coconut coir bricks, and yes you need to rehydrate them. Its a simple process and there are many youtube videos about it...I think Natures Head has instructions on their website. When unable to get coconut coir on the road, we started using bagged Jiffy Seed Starting mix that has coir and peat moss as the main ingredients. One or 1 1/2 bags of it worked perfectly in our Natures Head and it didn't need to be rehydrated, just dumped straight from the bag.

Been using a "composting" toilet for 2 years now.
I did DIY. The store bought toilets are quite frankly bad.
One,they cost too much for what they are .
Two, so difficult and gross to clean.

And no one REALLY composts do they? Probably not.

I went with a urine separator and 5 gallon bucket,toss the bag once a week. Takes less than 5 minutes to empty and clean.

I've also found a "medium" is absolutely not necessary. The TP and baby wipes are sufficient to conceal the poo. Since you're probably not really composting, it's just an unnecessary cost of $ and storage space.

A 5 gallon bucket and peat moss is all I’ve ever used. Add a toilet seat if you need to. Why make things so complicated?
