@gs1949 I am aware there are differences between fascism and communism but thanks for making that assumption. The points I was trying to make and you appear to agree is that the Chinese people are more easily controlled by their government. The Chinese government notified the WHO on Dec 31 that they were investigating several cases of an unusual pneumonia type virus and on Jan 23 the entire city of 11 million was ORDERED not suggested to stay indoors, and in my opinion that is (locked down early) What has the West done with so much more notice and knowledge of what this is? Until three weeks ago everyone was running around like nothing was going on and some idiots still are. One governor says stay indoors and another tells you to go outside and get some exercise. The Canadian prime minister tells you if you’re healthy you don’t need a mask and in the same news briefing the chief of the cdc says everyone should wear a mask, I’m going to trust the Dr before the politician and put the mask on.
Once again all stay safe

You're right, man. Totally.
I look at the places that took this seriously and am jealous. We're in for a rough time of it.

:greetings:what the heck are you doing up this early? 6:00? Hope you’re feeling better than you were during some of your earlier posts and staying healthy.
As we say up here in the north, keep your stick on the ice!

I get up at 4-6 every morning.

I've actually been researching how to move to canada last few days. I love the Newfoundland accent.

Yeah, thanks man. I'm feeling LOTS better. I had anxiety pretty bad a a kid and young adult and for whatever reason this set it all off again. I was having full panic attacks daily the first couple weeks of this.
Now that we're both home and have been here for 2 weeks I'm settling down. :marshmallow:

The UK's prime minister insisted on not taking the lockdown advice seriously. He even bragged about shaking hands with lots of folks. Guess who has it now?!

Ya I don’t think Boris is laughing too much now.
Glad to hear you’re doing better, that’s got to be a rough battle in all this sh*t storm.
My wife is Newfie, she moved away from there at age 14 and she’s still got a bit of it. Her parents are a different story, when they all get together and start yapping I sometimes have to just step back and zone it all out.

I know the feeling. My wifes from Scotland and I hang out with lots of Scottish folks. When they all get going at once its quite entertaining, but hard to understand sometimes.

I’m sure glad that the hardware stores are still open. I’ve also been able to get in touch manufacturers, the only exception being Camco who had a message on their voicemail saying they were closed by order of the governor.

I still hate going to the hardware store. I glove up and then wash my hands with alcohol before I get in the truck.

I haven't been into one in about three weeks now. The Ace Hardware right by my bus is staffed by avid smokers who coughed away nonstop in the good times - I don't even want to order anything for pickup from them now, the inside of that place is sure to be coated in a thin layer of whatever they happen to be infected with right now. It sucks because this is the only place around that has an aisle of loose bolts, screws and nuts etc. (including Grade 5 and Grade 8 stuff). It was always super-handy to have that nearby.

My understanding (from my wife who runs a commercial food production facility) the virus fortunately is relatively delicate -- it will (it's outer shell) breakdown on cardboard in 24hrs and on metal surfaces in 5 days. The food safe "QUAT" spray (quatenary sanitizer) they always used for cleaning everything is effective in destroying the virus on the surface of things and only needs to contact the virus for 30 sec to kill the virus.
Normal washing machine soap kills the virus in any laundry you have.
yesterday I enter the house through the garage -- left all the non-perishable food I bought in a box on the garage floor. Left my Harbor fright purchases' in another corner. Entered the laundry room and stripped down (you're more likely to have the virus on your clothes than get it IN your eyes or mouth directly -- think of the difference in surface area) just like I would if I was concerned with poison ivy exposure. Wash my hands. Go shower, wipe down the door knobs ect with quat and resume living like a normal person...
And in a couple daze I'll bring the food in from the garage...
My local Lowes has erected plexi-glass barriers between the cashiers and the public -- of course, they already have all the material in stock to do that...
But I'm still glad they did both for their employee's and the public.
Long winded, but my point being -- sensible and cautious, yes; paranoid NO!

Best Wishes Everybody!

Same here.....also Walmart and the grocery stores.

But the post office took it a step further. They've hung those clear plastic strips you see on loading docks to keep out cold air.....floor to ceiling. You have to reach between the strips to do business.

I would like to point out that there is a common error that I see repeated in this thread, which is people talking about killing the virus, like it was a bactria or an insect.

You cannot kill a virus, simply because it is not alive. Nor does it need to be killed to prevent infections. A virus is simply a package of RNA that highjacks the host's genetic material. I don't quite remember if it attacks RNA or DNA within the host's body.

So you don't need to "kill" the virus. You just need to damage or destroy the packaging, and then the RNA inside that packaging will degrade and be harmless. And you don't need any fancy chemicals. Bleach, alcohol, peroxide, or any strong cleaner will do the job. I think even vinegar would probably work, but I would want that confirmed before I relied on it.

Sort of related: another common misconception is North Korea's "communist" government. North Korea ceased being a communist government decades ago. They've morphed into their own brand of military-first, religion-based type of government called "juche". Ask any North Korean who God is, and they'll say the Kim family.

I don't think there are any true communist governments left in the world, which is a testament to how effective it is. Maybe in Latin America?

I think Cuba might still be considered a communist country, but I am not particularily knowledgeable about the recent situation in Cuba. Cuba may have morphed towards fascism in recent years. I don't really know, but that would not surprise me at all.

That's a very good point about the North Koreans, but I've never met any North Koreans, just Southerners.

Meh, that's all semantics. Half a dozen of one six of the other, man.

Its a totalitarian cult of personality.

I just read an article where the chairman of the national Academy of Sciences says that studies have shown that the virus can hang in the air for some time. Makes the trips to the hardware store seem much more hazardous now,.

everyone not involved in the US gov't has been telling us similar. Masks are important in public.
