The antibody test is only 50% accurate. In other words, you'd get equivalent results from flipping a coin.

The company started out using the Euroimmun AG Anti-SARS-CoV-2 ELISA IgG antibody test and then added the Abbott IgG antibody test. It is continuing to use both tests, although the Abbott test has become the primary platform. Euroimmun is a division of Perkin Elmer.

Both tests have received emergency use authorization from the FDA; only 10 serology tests have received this designation from the agency. The Euroimmun IgG test has a reported specificity of 96% and sensitivity of 65%, while the Abbott test claims a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 99.5%. The FDA has just cracked down on serology tests requiring supporting validation documentation to be submitted within 10 business days of an initial notification.

According to quest they now use three kinds of test kits-

Interestingly they're not all FDA cleared yet.

Yes and no. The problem with those tests is that almost half the positive results are false positives. Antibodies from other viruses make you test positive... My understanding is the false negatives are pretty low.

The one test they do has very high degree of accuracy. I should find out which we got. Not that it really matters as we didn't have any antibodies.

Hope you are feeling well in the morning, _DZL ... like everyone has said, keep hydrated. I like good ol' chicken soup. :)

"not by much" is where science says you are wrong..

ECCB's analogy rings pretty true along with the science..

aerosolizing the virus occurs when you breath out (esp through your mouth).. a lot of people breath through their mouth.. esp larger people or those who have allergies, etc..

aerosolized virus can travel further and is easier breathed in..

Cloth face masks do a very good job of preventing aerosol.. even though droplets can breach cloth masks, they often dont get very far on the EXHALE.

yes you can easily INHALE aerosolized virus through cloth masks, if you dont aerosolize it in the first place or its minimalized then the Inhaler has not much worry..

with 40-60% of infected people Never getting sick.. ever.. thats a lot of people potentially running around with no idea they have the virus.. if everyone masks up including those who have zero symptoms, then we have a lot better chance of arresting the virus before it even makes to the air or a table service, door, grocery cart, etc...

N95s are wonderful. but they are tough or expensive to get.. if we told everyone to only wear N95's then we would have many less people masking up at all even though science says it helps..

My statement of "not by much" was for prevention as a wearer. A cloth mask doesn't do much to keep you from getting it in a room full of those who have it.

As you pointed out, it can help prevent a person from spreading it, but that only works if everyone is wearing masks. As we all know, that's not the case. So don't go into a store wearing a cloth mask thinking that you're immune. Even wearing an n95 isn't prefect.

As far as wearing n95's, I had a handful bought before coronavirus for bus/house/work. I'm not overzealous on safety or osha, but if you're doing any sanding at all, dealing with insulation, or producing dust, you should wear a good mask. Masks are cheap when it comes to the cost of lung damage.

Yes, the cost of masks was absurd, as was hand sanitizer and other products that were hoarded and resold at a huge markup. I think most have access to them now at a reasonable cost.

Stay safe all.

Still having a hard time finding Lysol spray (or any other disinfecting cleaner) in the Fort Worth area.

yes ultimately masks only work if the sick person in a room is wearing one.. agreed they dont do much for healthy people in a room where a virus is floating about.. and N95's yeah they were sold out the first day.. i had a few for the very reason you mentioned.. drywall sanding, I wear them when I go in my attic to run a wire etc..

whats really interesting is just in the few days that the floyd protests have been going on, ive notived mask wearing to have gone down substantially.. at least here in central ohio.. I was out and about yesterday and it seemed like all the suddebn less than half the people had them.. even people id seen previously wearing them werent.. the videos of the protesters looked to be about half or less of them wearing.. thats expected.. when protesting abuse, a mask is the last thing you think about when its time to move. however its unexpected to me to see others back off in such a short time..

mask wearing was on the rise here until this weekend..

I wont know how it is in the downtown area for some-time. many of the small businesses I patronize every day were destroyed completely. those places had set up strict mask requirements and adhered to them.

apparently business insurance doesnt cover this sort of thing.. in one case it is.. maybe special policy?

and already weak from Covid, a couple acquaintences of mine are calling it quits completely..

Latest development in FL unemployment- You can't just go on their site and access your info anymore. There's a queue to even get onto the site now.

The tweets aren't helping at all.

Man that really sucks, Chris. did your coffee shop make it through the weekend?

currently all the ones in the downtown area I attend are closed.. up until 20 minutes ago all the streets leading into downtown were closed to all except anyone who works or lives there.. I guess its "open" now.. but I have no need to access my office so I wont go in.. ive offerend my help to friends however im not going to just go to "be there".. if the need arises ill mobilize.. pretty much all the windows are gone all along the main arts (short north) district.. the suburbs werent (havent yet) been hit.. although AntiFa claims that going into suburbs and residential areas and "taking whats ours" is their next thing.. that sentiment isnt endorsed by BLM..

fortunately there are a lot of Locally owned small businesses in the suburbs to patronize that are open and practicing safe CoVid measures, so I can still shop small ..

the timing is bad for all of it..

but there is absolutely NEVER a good time to KILL AN UNARMED MAN senselessly!

Being so new to the area I don't know what to think...
So quiet and peaceful just a few miles outside of Columbus here in the 'farm-land' --
But that of course is part of the problem...

Always room in the driveway for one more bus if you have the need to get out and park somewhere new!

Peace

With all the chaos and discontent going on in our country, there is a lot to be said about being in rural America. We are still holding at only 3 recovered cases of Covid, and zero rioting and looting. Our local police force is well respected and does a good job at quickly weeding out those with little integrity who try to join the department. Hearing that Antifa is going to target suburbs next to take what's theirs brings to mind an ad in a gun magazine I read a few years ago. "FYI, that locked door you just kicked in was there to protect you from me, not the other way around!" Sure feels like it's time to triple my food and ammo storage.

So Antifa says they're going to "take what's theirs"? they better bring a lot more than just their bent socialist ideology and a bicycle chain. No one is entitled to anything they did not earn and they should be prepared for the consequences of trying to take it from the wrong person.
Crazy times are about and not likely to change anytime soon. How does the frustration over the death of a man justify rioting, stealing and destroying the hardwork of any business person? And targeting big business is no different, it's just an excuse to show your true colours as a piece of sh*t scumbag thief.
Once again, just my opinion.
Stay safe all

Wow, cowardly leadership. I know this is suppose to be a no politics thread, but it's also suppose to be about the effects of Covid. Since the last two posts drove it right off the rails, I just have to point this out. I just looked up the top 20 cities in the country that are having riot and looting problems. 19 of them are lead by Democratic leadership. The 20th, Las Vegas, claims to be an independent who replaced her democratic husband. Not saying the republican cities aren't having problems, but I quit looking after 20 because I couldn't think of any more big cities off the top of my head.

No one's naming parties or WHICH leadership. We're literally being as gentle as we can not to talk about the "emperor's new clothes". I, as a Floridian feel especially the need to criticize the cowardly little sock puppet we have governing my state. Its nothing partisan. The guy just aint a leader he's a damn lackey. A crony.
Criticizing the gov't and leadership during a pandemic shouldn't be so surprising. We'd be total SHEEP not to!
Thinking one party has unilateral ownership of patriotism is a very dangerous and selfish way of thinking.
