I don't see how we'll ever have a second wave when we're still in the first wave.

Its frustrating to look at more densely populated countries having success and to see us here in the states having a very rough time even convincing people its real.
People literally took to the streets to protest the wearing of masks. I have now-former friends literally convinced I'm part of the "new world order" because of my stance on the reality of this virus and my use of ppe.

A little more humility is in order, methinks.


Yeah, we finally have some good data about COVID19, but its a brand new virus and the studies and conclusions really need to be considered provisional based on 6 months of incomplete infection data.


For example:


We don't know anything about this COVID19's capacity to hide in animal populations. West Nile wiped out maybe 90% of the crows east of the Mississippi 25 years ago before anybody knew what was going on. Fortunately, transmission to humans is rare. Avian flu is just that- hiding in birds. No vaccine for either of them.


We don't know anything about COVID19's capacity to mutate. Flu viruses do it so often the seasonal vaccine has to be reformulated every year for the latest mix of viral strains. If COVID19 can morph into COVID20, and that new strain is just 20% more virulent, 20% more communicable, or can beat COVID19 antibodies in humans, all bets are off. The second wave of "Spanish Flu" pandemic in 1919 was most likely a second strain of mutated virus...


The public and governments are putting huge faith and resources into vaccine development but that's a moonshot. Fortunately, we did indeed get to the moon, and the current efforts are of a different magnitude and capability than previous vaccine development. Still, COVID19 looks a lot like rhinoviri, which cause the common cold. No vaccines there. No HIV vaccine. MERS. Lyme Disease. HepC. TB. Shingles. Herpes. The list goes on and on, and these are not all 3rd world orphan diseases. Virologists are also worried that the first vaccine that seems to work is going to be pumped too quickly into the wild human herd. That's another basket of risk, like Thalidomide in the 1950s or "hormone replacement therapy" that caused so much breast cancer a generation ago. Here's to landing on the moon, and getting home safely, but it gives me pause...



We know very little about COVID19 post-infection immunity, how long it lasts, who really has it, and next to nothing about herd immunity beyond the modelling on other viri in other circumstances. Could be as we all hope, but we don't know..



My guess is that retroviral cocktails will come online sooner than a silver bullet vaccine. This treatment has been keeping Magic Johnson and millions of HIV patients like him alive for decades without a vaccine. An effective protocol that disrupts the COVID19 infectious process may well significantly reduce the mortality of disease, and buy us some time to develop a truly safe & effective vaccine. Even without retrovirals, we are getting better at understanding this disease and treating it, and I think mortality will reflect that by the end of the year, especially in the 1st World.



I expect we will be with COVID19, at a lower death rate, for a long time. Unless this bugger suddenly gets more muscular on us, which would be a whole other pot of trouble.


In the meantime, we can demonstrably protect ourselves and each other pretty well with a disciplined way of living for the foreseeable future, and a healthy dose of humility.



Just my $.02, which you can no longer get here in Australia. 5 cents has been the lowest denomination of coin minted for decades. I have some very old one cent coins, though, and they are amusingly huge. Big as a Kennedy half dollar but thicker; I think they are bronze...

Interestingly, we do have a lyme disease vaccine, but the side effects are significant enough that it is banned from the U.S.

Been feeling achy the last 24hrs, wasn't too concerned as i was working pretty hard outside yesterday ripping out a stump, and doing some yard work.
This AM (18hrs ago) digestive issues began (which I thought wasn't a symptom but turns out it is.)
Fast forward 12 hours, chills begin, but no temp, actually low temp (97.3),
Fast forward 4 hours temp 99.9,
Fast forward 2 more hours temp is 100.4. Still have chills, aches, digestive issues, and a warm forehead, but don't feel too bad overall.

No other S&S, most notably no shortness of breath or cough. Could be Covid-19, might be the Flu, might be something more minor, might even be out of my system by morning. CDC recommends quarantine but no test/hospital visit based on my current S&S which seems reasonable.

I gotta admit, I was still taking things seriously but getting a little complacent, always wearing a mask out and about, washing hands regularly, and going out as little as possible, but just mentally a bit more complacent and not as hyper aware of what I touched.

Just checked the numbers, new cases in California (and many other states) are still steadily rising, roughly 3000 new cases reported in the state yesterday.

Maybe, its nothing or something minor and I'll feel fine in the morning, maybe not, either way, its a good reminder for me not to be too complacent or cavalier.

Starting to feel better now, and as I mentioned before, a renewed diligence in washing hands and keeping out of others personal space

The numbers in CA are much higher on weekdays as well, I started getting sick on a Friday or Saturday, can't recall which, and I spent all day Sunday calling around trying to find out what precautions I should be taking and whether I should get tested, turns out, there basically is no accessible testing in my county on Sundays, the places that did offer it required a referral from my doctor (whose office is closed Sundays). Long story short, It was basically impossible for me to get tested on Sunday, when Monday roled around getting tested was quick and easy. if my experience is applicable to other parts of the state and country, it explains the repeating weekly dips in new cases.

For Florida to get to about the same number of per capital cases that New York State had at its peak, you'd need around 8,000 new cases a day. Of course, there are also differences in the availability of testing, elderly populations, number of hospital beds, etc.

I got coughed at by an old lady today. I had a mask on, but it sure feels sketchy being around old people now. She's always coughing, so I hope its just her normal thing.
Its an old lawn customer of mine who's having a hard time right now, so I try to help her out when I can. Her neighbor and I are taking turns mowing it.

The place is gorgeous anytime but it's the people you have to worry about.

I do believe borders are still closed, even between provinces, without 14 day quarantine mandatory.
Not aware of their Covid stats but it is everywhere man.



I'll meet you there someday and we can get into some of God's medicine, good ol sea weed! Lots of boondocking up there so bring the bus and the Miata and we will tour ....

I can get in with any kinds of ppl, so I'm not too worried about the locals up there. I find good people everywhere I go.

Love that they sell cannabis at the grocery stores there. That blows my mind. Will definitely meet up with ya someday up there or down here!

im just doing my thing... i cant stay locked up in a house fearful of a virus that may or may not kill me.. I *CAN* wear a mask and not do dumb crap like sing in a church choir or go to a protest.. I also cant stay in complete solitude either otherwise as ive said before.. i *will* be a death statistic albeit corona or not.. i got together with a few friends this weekend to move busses around.. we stayed in clean hotels and washed our hands alot.. im not sure really how the virus travels around in grease and diesel fuel so we prob did OK..



More and more businesses in columbus are making masks a requirement.. esp now that obtaining masks is becoming easier.. a couple places said they didnt at first because getting masks was hard and they had to turn alot of people away if they didnt have them.. now its easy to get them so turning someone away due to a mask means if they want to patronize they will get some..



no one here masks outside.. I dont either.. honestly I have trouble breathing outside in the heat in a mask.. I love the heat I spend alot of time outside.. im not going to sit in overly air-conditioned spaces just so I can wear a mask.. however I do put one on before I go inside anyplace that isnt my house..
