Straw men are killed everywhere. First responders die saving non-seatbelt and non-helmet wearers, they get put in the ICU and take up room that could save others, their fatherless kids are a burden,....

What about haircuts ? 99% of people is see wearing a mask are sporting a haircut. A haircut is fairly high risk in exposure and unnecessary in this climate some might even say "self absorbed and arrogant".

Who gets to decide what is acceptable behavior ? You ? Mass media ? or.. did mass media tell you and now you are justified to tell others ?
Remember in March when mass media was making fun of people wearing face masks ? When the CDC said they "were ineffective" ? I do.

We are all going to get this. It is about how we act until we do. Telling people that do not behave and think like you they are "unacceptable" might not be the best way to act.

Self absorbed and arrogant was not meant directly at you but for the general population. This culture of instant gratification and self worth has created a populace with a very short attention span. Many were all rah rah at the onset and now have lost interest and moved on to whatever suits them. Not sure where you're going with the fireman analogy? They have a duty to protect. And there are many laws relating to seatbelt and helmets for a reason even if they are ignored. And yes I do remember when all the hype and Drs told us we didn't need masks, guess what sometimes they lie! Maybe they were trying to conserve resources for the first responders and hospitals? Maybe the science changed as the studying progressed. "We are all going to get this. It is about how we act until we do" well with that attitude I guess you might be right? I do not expect everyone to behave and think like me, You are more than welcome to do what ever suits you just like I am, if some assh*le with a cough gets too close to me in Home Depot I just might be inclined to protect myself and my family by showing him his teeth.
You take care and be safe

As they say in politics-"Never let a crisis go to waste."

The virus is as real as it gets. But our actions are a valid discussion.

It is a matter of how we act until we get the Virus. We can hide in a basement with a N95 mask tell our family to stay away tru zoom- (other side of extreme) we can go out dancing every night.

It is all personal strategies.. well,, for some who like to make decisions for themselves.

Covid19 is very infectious. Most of the world will get it. We will all most likely get it. If someone plans on hiding from it until big pharma gets a vaccine then produces enough vaccine to distribute it to the masses=2-4 years ? to maybe never. Not a realistic strategy. If you do the math of the virus growth we will all have had covid19 in that time frame.

If wearing a handkerchief makes you feel safe then great. Many don't share that feeling. As of now our hospitals are not overflowing and many folks like to be in charge of their own risk assessment and management.

Personally I don't really care if someone wears a mask, seat belt, helmet, gps tracker, etc

well we're quickly running out of icu beds. I hope the dancing is worth it. I'm not "hiding in a basement with n95". We just visited the father in law. We distanced and there was no way of spreading the virus.
Its not really a debate. There's the science and there are the folks ignoring or not believing it.
Folks not masking up is like going out driving but without tail lights or turn signals. Certain concessions have to be made when it comes to public safety.

Do whatever you want out there, folks. But if you're a willing spreader or just indifferent to the spread well I guess we'll just have to agree we have different morals and ideas of civic responsibility.

The countries that masked up the quickest had the least deaths. https://www.khaleejtimes.com/coronavirus-pandemic/early-face-mask-adoption-helped-42-countries-avoid-coronavirus-mayhem-study

on another note- 7000 new cases in CA today. Holy smokes. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/24/world/coronavirus-updates.html

wow man! I can get behind all you just said. Fully agreed. :marshmallow:

What if someone thinks it is wrong for you to bring your family consumer shopping in the middle of a pandemic ? or doesn't like the way you wipe down your cart ? and attacks you ?

We all do things that might not fit into another persons idea of an idea pandemic survival and management scheme. We can't just start attacking each other.

Its not really a debate. There's the science and there are the folks ignoring or not believing it.

Their is a pandemic it is real and it is a big deal. The debate is the behavior and interaction with fellow humans during it. Their is a wide area of grey in -How to social distance- Masks ? Government cell phone GPS tracking and tracing ? Door to door visits ? Once a week food distribution ?

I am just saddened at the aggressive attitude of people willing to bash anyone not following their particular idea of "safety" or beliefs.

The countries focused on in this article (Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and China and some other South-East Asian) had many other factors besides wearing masks.
These countries has very in-depth pandemic management schemes such as testing, contact cell phone tracking, no stores open, in your apt.. leave one hour a week, never get closer then 20ft to another human.

The sad thing was we had weeks and months ahead of them to prepare. What did the US do ? Not a lot, beside a denial game.

on another note- 7000 new cases in CA today. Holy smokes.

The way it looks as of now is we are going to have a good 10-15 hot spots in the next month or two that will probably look like NYC did a month or two ago.

I agree. We knew it was coming at least as early as Dec. But yet we still have no mask mandate. Unreal.

Compare us to any country you like. The only countries that are doing as bad as us also have very similar "leadership".

My prediction? Florida and Arizone will have arenas and convention centers as makeshift hospitals in less than a month and medical professionals will be rushing to the states from all over the country. Within 6-8 weeks, the news will be broadcasting the improvised morgues - refrigerated trucks, ice rinks, commercial freezers...

What is really scary is that Florida is taking no action at all and Arizona isn't taking much. As bad as New York and Italy got? Only the fraction of what's coming there. Georgia's a month or more behind that curve, but hopefully the news out of Florida will convince our empty suit governor to do something before we reach crisis here.

I hope I'm wrong. Good luck everyone.

It is a sad case of extremely bad disaster management. The US has a large collection of the leading virologists and infectious disease experts in the world and we have resources. It all just had to be put into play and managed. Didn't happen.

Personally I am also upset about the denial and repression of info early on. At the end of January when a city of 8million was shutdown in Wuhan that's a big deal.. There is a major Pandemic coming. but until late March all the mass media was just reporting "don't worry about it" and the CDC said "not an issue". Behind the stage nothing was done. We are hanging out with 3rd world countries in this.

If a mask makes you feel more comfortable, wear it. My pandemic strategy includes a mask sometimes along with other things.

Wow. What's the mask situation in Tx?
For the most-part, folks wear masks when out in public. At dine-in restaurants, they are worn until it is time to eat and drink. All employers are now mandated to have every employee wear a mask under penalty of a $500.00 fine. The population is encouraged to do the same, but there is no penalty. One exception I have noticed is that QT gas/convenience stores employees have NEVER worn masks!

Houston's ICU is 90% full according to this- https://www.tmc.edu/coronavirus-updates/proposed-early-warning-monitoring-and-mitigation-metrics/

If some things don't change pretty soon in TX and FL we're going to be in a bad way.

The number of available hospital ICU beds is one metric that the governor watches (and reports) regularly. It is a big driver for the policies enacted.

Gotta say you're governor sure seems a lot more competent than ours. Apparently he said this yesterday-

Our is like "I think its all fine".

He also has said that if the current trend continues, he will have to implement more strict policies (meaning going back a few steps). He is trying hard to open up Texas fully while keeping Texans safe. It is a hard job and I believe most Texans support his efforts. The most recent "tightening" has been to allow county and local entities to regulate gatherings of 100+ whereas it was 250+ that they could manage autonomously. There are many counties in North Texas (where we live) that need to be able to control the size and frequency of gatherings but were powerless to act under the phased opening of Texas. Now they can use their own judgement based on the conditions in their region to adjust their regulation of larger gatherings.

I am just saddened at the aggressive attitude of people willing to bash anyone not following their particular idea of "safety" or beliefs.

We have had six months to see how his is developing and it's not good.
The only one I'm prepared to bash is the jackass pushing his way thru an isle and obviously showing zero concern for anyone else. I agree with you it's not a great situation but if you believe everyone should just be nice to one another and get along sorry to say that's not how the real world works. I've been well prepared for isolation for many years and immediately isolated myself and my family very early on. I'm not prepared to let anyone screw that up just because I should be nice. It goes both ways.
Take care

We're starting to really worry a bit down here. Our governor is totally unwilling to take any real action. Just more words and excuses. Big cities here like Miami, Jacksonville, and Tampa are probably going to have a real hard time.

Stay safe up there sir. Wishing all the best for you and yours as well as EVERYONE here.

You are talking about isolating yourself then in the next sentence bashing people for pushing thru isles.

I keep seeing this behavior "Look!! No one at the beach is wearing a mask" Why are you at the beach ??

Why are you at the ______ ? (non-essental place at high traffic hours)

What if someone thinks it is wrong for you to bring your family consumer shopping in the middle of a pandemic ? or doesn't like the way you wipe down your cart ? and attacks you ?

A daughter of a friend works at the local walmart, personal shopper I think. She said she had to break up a fight the other day that started because someone walked the wrong way down one of the one-way isles.

I try to shop during early in the mornings, not walmart but the local grocery store. I've always tried to avoid all crazy people at the big box stores.

There are crazies of all types. Every age, nationality, race, religion, gender, political affiliation, or any other way you want to break it down.

I think the stress of Covid has caused more of the crazy to be visible.

I agree. Not necessarily the virus itself, the stress of all of the changes Covid has caused us to deal with.

I do the same once a week I hit a store at early hours swoop thru and get my stuff in less then 15mins. I had stocked up with a 30day supply so when things are out I don't have to worry.

About a month ago I saw a guy storm a crossed the store and get in a old guys face because his face mask was not covering his nose. He got all agro and threatening saying "I F*&K you up if you don't get that mask on".
I went over and said "Leave him alone.." Almost got in a fight. WTF ?

Not fun.. I am getting sick of aggressive people.

I think the stress of Covid has caused more of the crazy to be visible.

I agree. My daughter keeps saying "People are getting crazy out there"

I'm not really concerned about what you think of my behaviour. I've not been to the beach, bar, nightclub or restaurant. I don't go to any non essential place weather it's high traffic time or not, I make efforts to minimize my trips out like everyone should and i have not been aggressive or threatening to anyone. What I said was I am prepared to do what I consider needed to protect my family, if that means I need remind someone they are too close for my comfort or if they don't get it maybe they need a shove to understand. Not sure why anyone wouldn't do the same. I'm not paranoid, crazy or a hermit, I'm cautious.
As I said before your opinion is yours and mine is mine, you go do whatever you think is right.
Move on.
