Hello all, I'm a new member who happily owns a 1978 36 foot Crown Supercoach. After 353,000 miles it seems time to reseal the power steering pump. I have tried online to locate the brand of pump to no avail. There are NO markings anywhere on the pump. The pump bolts to one of the accessory drives on the flywheel housing of the 6-71N. If any of you can point me in the right direction it would be a great help. I will post some pics of the Bus soon. Attached are pictures of the pump.
Thanks for any help advanced.

If you have a good hydraulics shop near you they could probably take it apart and measure the seals and o-rings and rebuild it. It looks like a Saginaw or Ross to me, but who knows.

Thanks s2mikon. I believe you're right. If I can't get any real info on the pump I'll pull it apart myself. I'll post images and measurements if it comes to that. I hadn't thought of Ross. My steering wheel is a Ross and the steering gear is a Ross. Sometimes I just don't think things through. Thanks again.

I believe that Ross is now TRW.

Most of the time they leak around the large housing o-ring. If it leaks out of the shaft seal it will leak into the engine oil. That's not good either. If it pressure tests okay you won't need a vane cartridge repair.

Yeah, I finally found 'Power Steering Specialists' an online company that specializes in heavy duty steering gears and pumps etc... I've been trying all different types of searches including photos with no luck. I searched for 'Ross power steering pump' after reading your post and found that my pump is an Eaton B model. Googled that and found the right kit for $30. I will post photos of the reseal when I install the kit. You have done some good here ewo1. Thanks!

Thanks again to you too s2mikon.
You said only one of the three magic words, (Crown, Crown, Crown), but it still worked and you got my attention. As you've seen, you've already found your answers, and a place to get the correct parts and technical info for the repairs. Good job.

This one great aspect of Crown ownership is the ability to find parts and technical expertise today almost as it was thirty years ago when they were in their heyday. Common, off-the-shelf components were used to build the Crowns. Components still in use, and even still in production today, in the vast heavy duty vehicle niches all over the globe. Even if the exact match isn't available anymore it's usually not too much trouble to find a current component and make the switch to restore full functionality. Crowns were essentially kit builds using equipment common to the heavy duty trucking industry, most of which is still being used today. Very little proprietary, except Body panels, and things unique to Crown. Everything else was bought from other vendors and installed in their builds.

You seem rather new here and may not know about me...yet, and haven't seen many (any?) of my posts, until now of course, but you should definitely send me a contact email and I will be able to provide you with some extremely important info on where and how to get the very best help for whatever future issues you will be running into on your Crown. Also do a search here for the other posts I've made over the years which were primarily Crown related. You may find something of value you didn't know you were lacking. 6-71 Engine shutdown operation explained for instance.

As an example, and a tease, you can get in touch with the Pacific Bus Museum in Fremont, CA. They have the complete library of ALL Crown builds with the data sheets for every Crown listing all the equipment that was installed on that unit. With your Crown VIN# (the 5 digit number from the build plate, Later Crowns by law went to the massively long VIN with mixed alfa-numerics), and a nominal fee, the Museum will send you a copy of YOUR Crowns' build sheet which will give you a tremendous head start on future issues and help you with planning repairs. Don't ignore this advice, contact Tom Schaefer at the PBM and tell him I referred you and he'll know what to do to get you your Crowns' build sheet. I have his cel # number but will only give it out with his permission and only to you via email or text to your cel.

Then you should really email me so I can reply back directly to you with attachments of the many technical documents I have. For instance I have a Crown Manual which is composed of many different technical sheets from each vendor, 3-hole punched and put into a large 3-ring binder. That's how Crown did it, since every Crown was essentially hand built to Customer specs and different from any other Crown. the binders contained the stuff for THAT Crown as ordered.

I will tease you with an example attached here of the page for the power steering pump assembly. Note that it says Cummins engine, but the reality is that that PS pump was used on the 6-71's as well (looked the same anyway). They are common as grass here in CA where Crowns ran far and wide when they OWNED the school bus market here in SOCAL. These PS pumps didn't change much at all over the years

I've been driving Crowns professionally since 1969, and still do today, with a couple Operators that have managed to keep them in service in spite of the Kalifornia Tyrants trying to kill them off. I have very many contacts with suppliers, mechanics, salvage yards, and Crown Operators, and private Crown owners here in SoCal, and across the country. I am a portal for you into the very exclusive domain of Crown Owners and this unique club of dedicated and evangelical owners are always eager to help a fellow Crown owner with anything they can. Once you make yourself known the floodgates will open for you and you'll never be alone again. I will make sure you can reach them as you need help. I'm not a bottleneck, I'll get you in direct contact with anyone who can help you. I'd also be interested in where and how you acquired your Crown, it's possible I even knew them. Till we can talk directly.....

I'll end this here but if you contact me directly we can text, email attachments, and even talk on the phone, and I can help you with any questions you will have.

Best Regards,

MIKE!!! You are the Crown guy I have been searching for. I am here in the East Coast a venerable Crown Bus wasteland. I am a outlier amongst Thomas Pushers. I have thousands of questions for you and other Crown officionatos. Windshield, spring bushings, particle board flooring, and Detroit diesel questions. Lets chat soon?~ Neurotaffy

When you say particle board floor you must have one of the last ones made. Before that it was marine grade plywood 1" plus. It took forever with a hole saw to bore a hole through.

Crown_Guy is a great resource and a fun guy to shoot the breeze with (y)
