So it seams that Murphy from Murph'ys law is paying me a visit...
Took my 9906 bus out for a ride, been sitting for 7 months, and not 5 minutes into the ride my "WARN ENGINE" light came on.

BEEb2 you are not alone!

LOL....

I hooked up Servicemaxx and started looking at the numbers.

coolant temp while testing was around 180 degrees
idle oil pressure at 26 psi but goes upto 50 psi no problem

Engine warn light ON
ICP desired 725 psi
IPR ctrl 16.45%
ICP pressure 725 psi

Engine Warn Light OFF
ICP desired 435 psi
ICP pressure 1342

Oil and filter, delco 15w40, changed 14 months ago, only drove the bus 1700 miles so oil is still relatively new.
Engine has around 210K miles, runs strong! No oil or coolant leaks!

Original IPR and ICP in bus, have not replaced.

When you start the bus, engine cold, she runs and shift fine but within 2 miles warn engine lite comes on and bus looses all power, limp mode. Barely 25 mph, engine surges when this happens.

with engine hot, clear DTC in S/M and within 10 seconds it comes back.

Ran KOEO test, injector test, each one failed when check engine light on, does not stall just runs rough. no blowby.

what am I thinking for repairs...

change oil and filter - see if it improves.
Torn between ICP or IPR, I think I might go with ICP as it costs less. If it turns out to be the IPR then I just save the old ICP for any future emergency, mine or a fellow stranded skoolie?

I have read the HPOP start to go downhill after around 200K miles. My idle oil pressure is steady at 25 psi and goes up quickly to 50 psi while driving and it says there.

I don't remember if I ever changed the fuel filter, or did the fuel gel from sitting over the winter... I don't think it is related but since I am in the engine I might just go ahead and change the fuel filter.

fingers crossed it not a failing HPOP!

There are currently three new posts about the warn engine light. I guess when it rains, it pours!

Hope you get it sorted!

HPOP screens

A question for those who have been there and done that....

I was reading on another site that the pre EGR motors (mine is a '99) have a screen on the oil input side of the HPOP that would require the HPOP to be removed in order to inspect and clean.

Emission motors (EGR engines) are different. The screen is actually on the IPR and not the HPOP.

Can anyone validate this and if true, have you ever had/seen a screen on the hpop itself that was dirty/clogged ???

I do know, from experience, that the hpop on the EGR motors are different from the non EGR motors and so are the IPR valves.

Yikes, hope you get it sorted out. Checking fuel filters is a good start, if you remove it is there any foaming or anything that is "not fuel"?

If it's been sitting for awhile this could be suspect. Bacteria tends to grow in diesel, especially older diesel and if the tank is infected.

I don't know but just my thoughts.

my 444E has a screen thats supposed to catch debris if the HPOP grenades and not let it go through the engine..

did you get a code 333 when your WARN was on? it looks like the HPOP was keeping up with the desired so am wondering what codes were set by the WARN light.. the pressure was a bit over the requested when the light was Off.. I would suspect the IPR at that point since the pressure was well above the desired..

with servicemaxx you can set it up to record your session.. and set the parameters you want to record.. then you can go drive and if your light comes on you can note the time and then go back and watch the recording to see what the parameter values were at the various points.....

thats how I found my ailing HPOP was that the WARN light only came on when I was hauling ass... my LPOP (dash pressure) was always pretty constant between 39 and 47 or so.. on the 7.3 it varies a bit.. apparently as the HPOP reservoire requirements change

Thanks for looking into this...I was wondering if the screen is at the input of the HPOP.. I'm not removing mine just to find out....yet!

I get the 333 code and the warn light at the same time. no other codes. I refresh and it comes right back within less than a minute.

I haven't had much time to play with it as we just got a new tool to play with, a HAAS 3 axis CNC machine. Between making room in the shop and setting it up, it is consuming alot of my time...still looking for a qualified electrician that won't let the warehouse burn down!

I might be crazy but I am asking myself is the IPR sticking?
What I'm leaning towards is...removing the ipr and try cleaning it out. First with brake cleaner (aerosol can) followed up with WD40.

On my milkshake bus I took apart that IPR but lost a small pin and could not continue. there really isn't any moving parts within the valve so let's see if I can give this one a "tune up"!

I have a copy of a Servicemaxx user manual so I am going to look into doing what you said about creating a session and going for a ride. That I think would be useful to learn!

It'll be a few days before I can jump on the bus again, I'll keep you posted.

Got lucky ???

I got lazy today and took a shortcut on full blown testing the HPOP.
I removed the IPR and cleaned it out/

I pushed down on the plunger within the valve stem and shot some brake clean in it. Re-assembled and went for a short drive of about 5 miles city and 10 miles hwy, 65mph @ 1900 rpm!

Happy to say no WARN ENGINE lite and no codes.
This weekend I'll do a longer test drive and hope to verify that I got lucky!
