Hello all,

Does anyone know what, if any, front engine flat nose bus came with a dt466 and an MT653? Also, for those with the front engine, how bad is access when doing a full rebuild?

Thanks!

Hello all,

Thanks!

From what I understand the 653 is just a 643 with an extra gear thats a granny low 1st.
I've seen plenty of buses with 643's. If the extra gear were an OD it would be cool but even the CO buses don't need a granny gear so I'd never have any use for one.

Thanks for that, I meant to say the 643! I forgot about the extra being granny, I just keep seeing combos with the 545 which I (perhaps mistakenly) believe to be less than desirable. Thanks for your input!

The 545 is ok for in town and rural areas with speeds up to about 45. Its definitely not a desirable transmission. On a good day it could be called adequate.

Thank you, I appreciate that.

I am inclined towards the DT..what would be the ideal transmission for long highways hauls and up and down mountains?

Is there a particular bus model that said combo came in and we should be looking for?

We are inclined towards FE transit style buses at the moment, and I would prefer '02 or older, but am open to suggestions. Thanks for the comments!

@pirate make/model? I took a look at your started threads and can tell you have a '98 international, but that's it. Thanks for the input.

I have an International 1993 with a tall headroom 35' dog house Thomas body. It has a fully mechanical DT466 and a 643 transmission. They are out there. Not a computer on the bus. Everything is mechanical

they are definitely out there.. in fact anything before 1995. was generally 643 equipped if it had a DT466.. ive heard of some very isolated cases where a mechanical 466 had a 545. but its rare.. navistar didnt like to sell the 466 with. 545 even though it was often asked for..

once the 466E came out, a low torque variant was created and offered with a 545..

the 466 mechanical and 466E are different animals..

My 1993 Amtran Genesis has a fully mechanical DT466 engine backed by the MT643 transmission. Space for a rebuild on this bus would be limited. If doing an in frame build it could be done by removing the radiator and the inside doghouse.
I wanted a purely mechanical bus for ease of repair. You can bump the power up on them by adjusting fuel and timing.
I also wanted a front engine configuration in order to turn the rear into a toy hauler.
