TL;DR - is it possible to convert from an electric door opener to a manual?

Hello! I have a 2014 IC PB105 48-passenger bus. It is a state-owned corrections transport for work release. No modifications done to it or anything; I only mention that because I'm limited by the state in where and how I can buy parts and kits. This was the first enthusiast group I found for busses. Online communities have been a wealth of information for every other vehicle I've dealt with, figured I'd give it a shot for this bus.

A few years ago we had to replace the door motor because the gear had become stripped out. It was a nightmare to track down a new one and out business office told us that was the only one they could find in the country. Now it is having the same symptoms and its going to need to be fixed in the near future. My boss wants me to look into the possibility of switching from the motor to the old school lever-style opener. Given tools, materials and carte-blanche, i could fabricate something that would work but would get a raised eyebrow in a DOT inspection. Has anyone ever switched from a motorized door opener to a manual one? Is there a kit? Can I take parts from another bus and frankstein one together?

best bet would be a junkyard.. I believe IC still offered manual doors in 2014.. theres not gonna be a factory conversion kit.. this is something that was Spec at order time...

a junkyard would be the place to find another door motor too..

no idea what state you are in.. i live in ohio and we have several junkyards where school busses end up.. 2014 is pretty new however generationally the door motor I beleive was the same for quite a few years.. there were electric and air doors on those.. both operated by a 3 or 4 position dash switch (or steering wheel control)..

im not sure what you mean by being limited to the state.. are you saying your state tells you where you can buy parts? if so, I cant help much as im used to finding parts where i can get them

That's exactly right, and it's maddening. We are only allowed to buy through state approved vendors and buying from anywhere else requires an exhausting and complicated quote process. Add to that the fact that oftentimes, we need parts for things that are outdated. Retailers don't carry the parts, the manufacturers don't make them, and we can't just go to amazon, ebay, or the scrapyard.

In any event, I appreciate the reply. I might take a day to go look through some scrap yards to see the setups for the manual doors. Get a rough idea of what a conversion would take. Maybe see what the cost of the electric motors would be from there. And then figure something out.
