Electric to mechanical lift pump 5.9 Cummins

In case anyone is doing a swap........

The fist gen dodge 5.9 Cummins from 89 to 93 used a electric lift pump in the fuel tank. This is the mechanical pump that replaces it, and prevents injection pump failure due to low fuel pressure. Most P pumped 5.9 Cummins that came stock in full size buses, already have this pump.

First pic is the stock priming pump when using the in tank electric. When this one fails, it fills the crankcase full of diesel fuel.


Second and third pic are the manual replacement pump that eliminates the electric pump in tank. This mechanical pump pulls it's power from the camshaft lobe. When it fails, it simply starts leaking.

Interesting... I'll have to look for this on my bus on Monday when I pick it up. You said most P-pumped buses don't have to worry about this? Mine is a 92 with a p-pump.

Only the VE pumps had this issue. VE pump was never used factory in a bus that I know of. I just added this info for people repowering older buses with a 5.9 from another application.

Other applications would include, but not be limited to, Dodge Trucks, Generators, Industrial equipment, Farm equipment, ect.

I have a 1990 blue bird that has a VE pump. like you said 89-93 dodges had them, but my TC2000 has one. i just got it so honestly don't know the full fuel system set up yet, but it is for sure a VE pump, i plan on putting a better fuel filter and pump system on it anyway, but just wanted to say there are buses out there with a VE pump. wasn't exactly what i wanted being as its not a p pump and doesn't have an intercooler, but it does have a heat exchanger....

Intercooler is an easy add on. And according to the tech I'm working with at Diesel Specialists here in the Houston area...good for another 10-15% in both HP and MPG on virtually any diesel when sized and installed correctly.
