Engine help.

Hey I have a 1990 Wayne international with a Navistar Engine 83k miles on her. .. I don’t know anything about this engine if anyone can help please do so

Ok, as you asked for help in two different threads I thoughts you had an issue with the engine. I won't "help" building your knowledge, but I'm sure members with more available time will shim in.

The DT- series engines were some of the best medium duty engines ever built. It and the Cummins 8.3 were what were called premium engines. They cost more to buy but they had wet liners and were in frame rebuildable. All the rest of the medium duty engines were called throw aways. Detroit 8.2, Caterpillar’s 3208, 3116, 3126, Cummins B series, IHC v-8 6.9, 7.3 and the Brazilian Ford 6.6 and 7.8. That does not mean you can’t rebuild them you can, it just costs a lot more. Pay me now or pay me later. They have parent bore blocks and must be bored and oversize pistons installed. That being said wet liner engines are a lot more sensitive to coolant maintenance. Use test strips and additive. Not hard to do at all. Kinda of like a pregnancy test strips. If it shows up the wrong color your screwed. Just kidding. It means you must balance the coolant nitrite levels. Keep clean oil and filters and drive it right and it will out live you. And no computers.

Looks to be a DT-360. Very solid platform. Easy to maintain.. cheap to in-frame. They are easy to make decent power out of and typically run 400k+ between rebuilds.


Their weak link is liner seals. The earlier units are more prone to it but as the liner o-rings age, they will start leaking coolant into the oil. Just keep an eye on oil.. have it tested by blackstone every so often to monitor for coolant contamination.


Hard to beat. Think 5.9 Cummins but built twice as strong and in-frame rebuildable.
