Evacuating Florida from Hurricane Irma

Weird. I live in GA off of I-85, about 30 miles NE of Atlanta and drove in/out of there this morning. While there was some traffic on 285 on the SE side, everything else (on my route) was quite moderate and moving smoothly.

85 wouldnt be a major route up as many peoiple fear the carolinas will get smacked.. regardless of the latest storm tracks.. so 85 to charlotte wasnt likely the most used.. people went up 75.. atlanta, chattanooga. and some cut off I40 / 24 in tennesee.. route 16 headed inland from savannah was bad..

im going on "bad" by what I saw on the traffic boards.. the traffic has calmed down a lot this afternoon and evening.. still heavy but not nearly as bad.

dog-rescue - are pets not welcome in shelters? is that why people leave them behind?

Many shelters won't allow pets, and I don't think any will allow pets without documentation of their vaccinations.

Sucks to hear people are leaving the pets behind and outside. I don't' even like my cat that much and I wouldn't leave her behind unless bringing her meant I couldn't bring a person.

There are several pet friendly shelters - so I am not sure why people would leave their pets - unless they are going to a friends or family member who would not allow them to bring pets.
It's all a bit crazy - I saw people fighting over bread and water. And other people grabbing 10-20 cases of water while some were not able to get any. I have seen some of the true butts of society. But I know the good people are out there - sad that there are so many jerks out to take advantage of people - or just be so miserable.

what i havent figured out about water... simple bottled water... is why wouldnt you just have a few cases in the cabinet.. it doesnt spoil....

when I got my apartment in FL.. I just went out and bought 3 cases of water and shoved it in my closet... along with batteries and flashlights.. I really had no idea if we would get a hurricane or not... when mathew came close I was like dang.. if this thing doesnt turn its path we could get hit.. and it wasnt super strong.. but when i first saw it i went out and bought some groceries and such to hunker down.. and filled the freezer with bags of Ice.... well aheads of time.. seemed like cheap insurance to be at the grocery store well ahead.. of course it didnt do anything to us... its still in the closet of the apartment..

im guessingwhen I move out of said apartment to ohio that it will be still good as I drink so0me of it on the bus-ride north..

...Mind you, if Yellowstone NP goes up, I'm in for it.

If Yellowstone goes supervolcano, the whole country's -------------

Also, if the midwest has a major earthquake, it may be my fault. :hide:

Seems to be weakening and moving more west. Now they're talking about 90 mph winds instead of 185 mph.

in orlando area the wind threats are lowered.. but you are on the tornado zon e so be careful..

st pete is gonna get smacked.. it strengthened to a Cat-4 again over night as it comes through the keys... and will skirt the west coast till it smacks ft myers and tampa bay head on..

You don't tie up animals during a human crisis! It's absolutely heartless and I hope every one of the SOB's drowns, dies, or at minimum gets charged with a felony!
If you can't take an animal with you, turn it loose and give it a better chance for survival than when the flood waters rise and they're paddling trying to stay afloat and give up from exhaustion.

****, can't type any more through the tears!
Bastages, every one of them!

I know, it makes me tear up too :(
But the article did read that they will find the SOB's and will follow every paper trail to do so and they will face felony charges when caught. If they need volunteers to help find them, I'll take the next flight down! That will be MY way of helping.

Well, that just makes me very angry...

I am still in Tampa Bay - not in an evacuation zone - but the wind will be a concern. The house is old. So it is what it is.

However, I would never leave without my dogs. I bought a bus for this reason - my dogs will be safe here - if not in the house - I am sure the bus will be standing tall after the storm!

Just got video from my neighbor of my bus. She's holding her own!

I'm with you on that... let me have at them. The sheriffs in many counties have said they will be issuing warrants and arresting... this gives me some hope.

I keep seeing photos of canals around Tampa with the water drained out. Imagining my boat sitting on the floor at best. I keep second guessing how we left the boat..

the big issue will be the surge that comes after the eye.. if it comes at High tide. (3-5 AM) then that makes it that much worse.. hopefully your boat fairs well.. tampa bay is tough. since its not had a major storm in ??? so tough to predict how things will do.. it **SEEMS** like most of the construction in the bay and st pete has been recent with solid buildings.. and hopefully updated docks that dont cut loose in these storms..

it should lose some of the high wind steam as its buffeting land now.. however tornados are the niggest threat to the state now.. the "dirty" east side of the storm
