After getting a spark in my eye right in the center -everthing is still a little blurry- large coverage saftey glasses then a solid shield is the way to go. I was under grinding putting in storage I had glasses on and a face Shield and the spark still hit hard closed saftey glasses are needed at least

Yes telling people new to metalworking that safety gear is for wimps, cowards, or "CNN viewers" is abject stupidity. I agree on that.

In over 12 years of running different departments of a steel fabrication shop I've had that same thing happen too.
The wind can do some crazy things with flying, tiny pieces of metal!
Hoping your eye/vision heal up quickly!

I have respect for the men an women who accepted hardship and danger to build this country in the Age of Pioneers.

Oh I have respect for them too, thing is, I've never conflated taking stupid risks unnecessarily for little gain to be what they did...

safety first.
i recommend a full face shield like ross showed or if you plan on welding then get an automatic hood with a grind mode.
i have had steel shavings drilled out of my eye and its no fun.
a guard is a definite and yes i have used grinders without because they didnt where needed like a flush cut.
just as important that i havent seen mentioned is the side handle.
especially with a cut off wheel and newbies on a grinder a side handle.
yes i have done all the stupid stuff and can attest to why it is safer for you and those around you.
if you have to do the work unsafe then make sure you have someone on standby watching to help when things go wrong not if.
everyone might say that wont happen to me because i have been doing it all my life.
real world experience with years of doing unsafe doesnt account for that one time when **** goes wrong.
this year i had an experienced 20-year pipefitter friend receive 83 stitches from his belly button up his chest and across his face.
his safeety glasses deflected it enough that he kept his eyeball.
3 -years ago i had a plumber remove the guard on his to do a flush cut on a cast iron toilet riser and he set down flat on the floor with his legs spread around the nipple and his work area like he had done for years.
this time like normal he only had one hand on the grinder and one hand on the pipe rise because he new he was at the end of the cut and it would try to bind.
well it bound up and he lost the grinder right into his nutsack. and he and his wife still didnt have kids yet.
it doesnt matter how experienced you or **** happens
i recommend grinders with the double switch called a deadman switch which i thought was industry standard now but i see that they still make the old off on switches that are not very helpful if a grinder gets away from you.
those are the ones you do not tie the cords together to keep them from coming disconnected those are the ones that you want to disconnect before it hurts someone else or tears up more stuff.
and please (i worked for one company ) do not put a six inch cutoff wheel on a 4-1/2" grinder yes it fits and it cut but it hurts when it comes apart.
i tell my crews everyday
safety first and everyone goes home.
the ones that have known me for a long respond. and if you have to do something stupid then call you first because you want to be involved.
