Hey everyone, so I decided to go ahead and tear out the driver area subfloor since I was already taking the seat out. Check my pics on Imgur and their captions.
I've used pink foam board and plywood for the subfloor everywhere else in the bus but l've heard some folks mention lizard skin (or something similar sounding) that's more sound dampening.
My driver area is raised 2" above the rest of the floor. I may have a bulkhead wall behind the driver side but I'm undecided on that.
Also I removed the wood all the way up to where the pedals are bolted down and that was fine. But on the other side of the steering wheel I accidentally air hammered some metal off the floor and bent it up to the left of the dimmer switch. I can now see out to the ground through that. Whoops. Planning on hammering it back down and epoxying or welding it to the floor or cutting it off with the die grinder and spray foaming in the hole. Couple holes here and there that I'll Bondo that we’re under the driver seat and then may be able to reuse the old seat mount for my RV captain chair, in which case I'll reuse those bolt holes.
This is a topic for another post, but I'm very much interested in using the air powered mount with an aftermarket chair. But for now I'm more concerned with how to re-insulate this area. What did y'all do? And did anybody replace their steering wheel?

I have not come back to this since embarking on the roof raise. But if anyone has any input in the next few weeks it’d be much appreciated!

I’m considering using 1/2” or so pink foam board below 3/4” plywood. Not sure what to put over that. Just paint? Rubber floor mat material? Regardless need to make sure it’s not too high to safely operate the pedals or to hold the necessary bolts for seats

That paint job looks top-notch, and I dig your air hammer.

Two things that helped me and might help you:

  • Buying gallons of farm-equipment paint, instead of milliliters of spray cans.
  • Insulating the undercarriage with two-part, closed-cell, spray foam.

I was ahead of my time with the latter one. Perhaps someday I'll have a TED talk about the variety of benefits. For now, though, kindly note that it is especially helpful underneath the driver's cab with all its nooks and crannies.

Thanks! I’ve heard of people insulating under the bus but I haven’t ever seen an explanation of how you do that? Does it not interfere with the mechanisms of the bus itself? And how do you navigate around all the air tanks and coolant lines etc that are under the cab? It sounds like a great idea though for the areas where adding height it a concern.
