Ugh! Welding! The one thing we don't have experience with but the thing we are learning about pretty quickly!

Sketching out an idea to convert our chair lift into a folding stair.

Has anyone tried something like that?

Any way you cut it, that's an incredibly heavy and complicated set of stairs. It would be much lighter, more compact, and more reliable (and probably easier and cheaper) to build a complete new set of stairs that fold out of that hatch.

If you start with something like these scissor steps, recess the top bracket in the floor, and notch the door (with good weather stripping), you would be able to open the door, fold the stairs out, and close the door again.

Scissor steps

I saw some steps at UnitedRV that stowed up into the door opening. They were similar to these: Mor/Ryde Steps

You may be able to stop in an RV dealer for ideas.

Prefab stairs? What is the fun in that?!?!

Seriously, thank you FatBoy. You just saved us from going absolutely batsh*t crazy trying to build a big, ugly, heavy, ridiculous, frustrating, floor space consuming mess!

Honestly, had a moment of Skoolie-induced insanity. We need to save up that creativity for some sensible problem solving. How much do we owe you, Doctor Fats?

Happy to help. I've only been a member of this community for a very short while (just starting my own build). From what I've seen, a lot of builds fail because the builder bites off more than they can chew. Start with what you need and get her on the road so you have a reward and reminder of why you started. Worry about the bonus features later.
