We've just became full time RVers in our Skoolie and are changing our residence to South Dakota. Our current insurance (State Farm) is dropping us since we don't have a permanent address. We do have a SD address with South Dakota Residency Center. We have been turned down by State Farm, Geico, National General, Good Sam, and a local broker. Either we are rejected since it was not converted by one of 3 large professional conversion companies or because we are full timers and don't have a real address in SD (with a utility bill). Any suggestions?

I think a lot of the insurance companies have gotten wind of the SD Residency center setup that's there.

This used to work, but they are wising up. They want to be able to physically find you if they need to.

If you have done a roof raise, this is likely the number one reason they won't insure you. Insurance companies don't wish to insure vehicles like this because they don't trust your welding. Even using official skoolie building companies doesn't help because they haven't built up enough reputation yet either with them.

If you have not done a roof raise. What have you told the insurance companies so far?

Also you may have to ask for "commercial for personal use" grade insurance. It's about as much a year as any car you'd own normally. It's more than RV insurance, but also more acceptable to insurance companies. But if you had a roof raise done, gonna be tough to find an insurer.

real simple, just get a utility bill in your name...ask some friends if they will let you use their address....

Yes, we have done a roof raise. They have not mentioned that the raise was the reason, but they did ask for pictures. It is a very high quality build.

State Farm has been insuring us and will keep insuring us if we have a physical address. We have been thinking about buying a cheap property in South Dakota just for this reason. Maybe a lot in a subdivision or possibly a crappy trailer on a piece of land.

They don't care about high quality, or the quality period. One of the reasons they ask for pictures is to tell if a roof raise was done. My insurance agent at state farm told me this as well.

I got insurance first, and doing a roof raise later. I'm in SC so i can't change the title over to RV for RV insurance anyway, so I just plan to continue with state farm commercial for private use policy as a BUS on the title.

I'd look into see if a small property for 1/8 acre is for sale for 1-2 grand., go to the county and get an address, go to the post office and register the address. Plop a mailbox on it. Take a picture of the mailbox to show them you have one if they don't believe you in the future. It'll fill up with junk advertisements, but it'll provide you with a lot of avenues.

Thanks for all the comments! We're checking into buying some land and will see if that works. This does delay us changing our residency to SD for awhile. :( We'll try to meet up with a realtor next week to start them looking.

While I like this idea, I do believe that the insurance company will be happy to consider this fraud then when they cancel your coverage it'll even tougher to find coverage.

How is it fraud, your friend rents you a room and you just spend alot of time on the road working, 6 months at a time, as a freelance consultant.
Simple rental agreement, phone, electric bill, heck even put that address on your drivers license, just do not say "I live in a bus", instead say " I like to travel more than the average person". If your friend agrees, no fraud cause you do get mail there and you do pay utilities there.

In Florida people use mail box addresses all the time, especially law enforcement in order to mask the private info from data brokers and the bad guys. statute allows them to mask their private home address from public records but makes no mention about using mailbox addresses so technically it is not illegal to do, in Florida.

There is no law in any state that says you must own a home or that you must rent a home and it must be in your name. What if it was in your girlfriends name or your uncle's name?

Look up your state driver licensing laws regarding how to show proof of residency and start from there!

South Dakota

All applicants are required to provide two documents proving your residential/physical address. These documents must show your full name, your physical/residential address, and be less than one year old. Examples of such documents are a utility bill, a pay stub, a rent receipt, a phone bill, a bank statement, a mortgage document, a homeowner's insurance policy/bill, a tax document, your vehicle registration, etc.
