I sure love the sound of the 350 and so far everything works.
Its a 30 year old truck so EVERYTHING needs a bit of tlc but I'm sure happy to have a nice truck.

Sucker starts right up and runs pretty good. It surges a bit when cold but that's likely due to the TBI being very old and crude. Looks like the smog stuff was deleted, crudely but its gone. Looks like the engine is newer than the truck so I believe its a rebuild or crate engine. I can't make out what it says on the intake manifold but it looks newer and aftermarket. Newer battery, albeit a small one. Newer battery isolator but no 2nd battery. It must have been removed when they took off the emergency equipment.
Non-mechanical plans are to slowly get the body semi-restored. The doors need the most attention. Its all there and working but the scraper seals and rubber parts all need to be replaced. The dash and bench seat are in ok shape. I'll probably go with buckets in the future since its a manual trans. Makes ergonomics a little easier when trying to adjust the seat to reach the pedals for my wife.
Hoping to get to the tag office today and get it all legal.

deleting the emissions is probably why the TBI isnt happy.. they never liked having sensors deleted.. though they would never totally shut down.. always seemed like the EGR sensor was an issue on these.. although it was pretty easy to fake it with a resistor and make it happy..



funny thing is the first "digital dash" build I ever did was for reading data out of the ALDL connector under the dash and displayed it on an old think-pad.. these and the eklectriconic carbs.. (thank god you dont have the E4ME carb setup!



TBI is easy... if it runs like crap cold, check the fuel pump pressure and the coolant temp sensor.. if it runs good cold but crap ewarmed up, the O2 sensor.


if it idles like crap, the EGR would get stuck open...

Cool, good to know!
It idles fine, but it sorta hunts RPM's and doesn't really set in to a smooth, consistent idle. Its not running rough or anything, though.
The transmission makes some slight noise in neutral and first. Probably a bearing. Shifts fine but will need to be addressed. Could this be the transfer case? I need to get under there and listen more to find out.
I'm going to get a solid plan together for this truck. Its still so new to me.
Good thing I've got some redneck dna. It was in 4 low on the trailer since the parking brake doesn't work too well. It always takes a little effort to get most 4x4's out of 4-by. After unlocking the hubs and shifting the t-case I knew to back it up a few feet. That did the trick.

Looks like there's not a catalytic converter on there, but like I said I need to get under there. Its been raining since the truck got here. The exhaust is a shorty with a turbo muffler. Sounds pleasing but I'll need to upgrade/fix it eventually.

I had tails that came out under the bumper... duals on the V8 and the other had the inline 6 that mightve had enough power to move a golf cart.. I knew why that truck had a granny gear..



first was down and to the left... that always was a noisy Gear-y sounding transmission. clutch was touchy on it too.. but it didnt break...

Ah, thanks man. That makes me feel better. I wasn't gonna worry too much about any noises till I can get a more thorough road test on it.
Granny gear sure is LOW!

They go to the same vocational school as general contractors. It's not easy coming up with 57 excuses for why $hit isn't getting done. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

the winch controller has some iffy connections, the selector is a bit finicky, One of the rear tail lights sometimes flickers a bit.

If those are your biggest problems when you get it, you scored a good one.

Buddy of mine did a forestry truck out of OR. Great truck but had the same issues with the shipper.

Got a light blue "antique" tag for the truck today. Drove it all around town. Its a crude, clunky machine... So its a WIN! Seems to be running better the more I drive it.
Fluids will be changed in the next couple days.

No it just saves you a TON of money on registration and plate.

Saved a ton on bus insurance switching to Allstate today AND I also switched the title to MH while I was at the tag office. As always- Switching the title simply requires a written statement that it has plumbing of some sort and 110v of some sort. No actual verification of that, you just have to say it. If FREE to change the title over, too.

This sucks. Ga. just passed a rule that all "classic" cars will pay a $100 registration fee. They decide what is classic. So that clapped out rust bucket POS Chevelle will cost you $100 instead of the $20 it would be for a 67 Chevrolet

in Ohio they technically want antique vehicles to be driving to or from a "show event".. however it seems unless there are lots of car shows all winter long and in the rain.. they dont care what you put an antique plate on

You don't know what a ton of money on registration and plate is. While I suspect that it has gone up (more than inflation) since '99, it still isn't SC or MD.


SC has the highest property taxes on vehicles in the US. A 1 yr old car valued at $17k will cost you $750 in property taxes. The quickest way to make them stop that BS would be to require the state to write you a check for what they appraise your car at.


MD doesn't have a property tax on vehicles. They do have a safety inspection that goes to private shops. Once a month at the very least there's a car fire in the traffic report. The safety inspection is once and done. Your 2000 Civic isn't any safer than any other car but it passed a safety inspection 18 yrs ago when you bought it. Never mind that you haven't changed the brake pads since then. It only has to pass if someone else comes along and buys it. At 20 yrs you can get a historic which gets you out of the safety inspection and the every other yr emissions testing but you can't drive it more than 5,000 a yr and they just changed it so you can't drive it to/from work. That 1999 Civic is one **** of a historic car!!! No one checks mileage not to/from tho.

Slightly related note and I find kinda interesting: PA loves them some taxes and inspections but they got rid of the stickers. It's weird seeing tags with no stickers on them.
